Hoima Resident District Commissioner Rogers Mbabazi has been referred to a health facility in Kampala after his condition reportedly deteriorated while in custody following his arrest over allegations of extortion.
Mbabazi was arrested over the weekend by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit in Kigorobya during an anti-corruption campaign led by Local Government Minister Balaam Barugahara at the weekend.
The arrest followed complaints by residents who accused Mbabazi of demanding money from people seeking his intervention in land disputes, without delivering the promised assistance.
Residents alleged that he demanded between Shs1 million and Shs5 million from individuals seeking help with land matters. Others accused him of colluding with land grabbers to threaten residents with eviction from their ancestral land.
After hearing the complaints, Barugahara reportedly directed anti-corruption detectives to arrest the RDC. Mbabazi was subsequently detained at Hoima Central Police Station.
He later reportedly developed health complications while in custody and was taken to EDPA Hospital in Hoima City for treatment under tight security.
Julius Hakiza, the Albertine region police spokesperson, said on Tuesday afternoon that Mbabazi’s condition worsened on Monday, prompting the hospital management to refer him to a health facility in Kampala for further treatment.
Hakiza said Mbabazi remained under police guard at the hospital as investigations into the allegations continued.
