In a major crackdown on drug trafficking, security forces seized 327.7 kilograms of dry ganja valued at nearly Rs 1.64 crore during a joint anti-narcotics operation conducted in the Kamalnagar-Krishnadola area of Sepahijala district in the early hours of the day. The substantial recovery is being viewed as a significant success in the ongoing efforts to curb the movement of narcotics through border-linked regions of the state.
The operation was jointly carried out by personnel of Sonamura Police Station, the 81st Battalion of the Border Security Force (BSF) and the 11th Battalion of Tripura State Rifles (TSR). Acting on specific intelligence inputs, the team launched a search operation at around 12.30 am and continued the exercise until nearly 5 am.
During the intensive search, security personnel recovered seven plastic drums containing a total of 327.7 kg of dry cannabis concealed in the area. As no individual came forward to claim ownership of the consignment, the recovered narcotics were treated as unclaimed property and subsequently seized after completion of the required legal procedures.
Police officials estimated the market value of the seized contraband at approximately Rs 1.64 crore. Following the recovery, Sonamura Police registered a case and initiated an investigation to identify the persons responsible for storing the narcotics and to determine the intended destination of the consignment.
Investigators are also examining whether the seizure is linked to any organised drug-trafficking network operating in the region. Given Sepahijala district's proximity to the international border with Bangladesh, security agencies have intensified surveillance and intelligence-based operations to check the smuggling of narcotics and other illegal goods.
Officials said the latest seizure highlights the importance of coordinated action among law enforcement and security agencies in disrupting illicit trafficking routes and preventing the movement of narcotics through border areas. The investigation is continuing, and further developments are expected as authorities work to trace those behind the abandoned consignment.
