Senior citizens and freedom fighters in Petauke District have received assorted hampers from the District National Events Committee (DNEC), with support from Dealer’s Corner Millers.
The gesture, which is part of this year’s Independence celebrations, is an appreciation gesture, also aimed at enabling beneficiaries to share in the country’s Independence celebrations.
The hampers were presented by Petauke District Commissioner Wachepa Phiri, who said the initiative was intended to share the Independence spirit with less privileged members of society.
“To share the Independence celebration with others who are not as privileged as some of us might be,” he said.
Meanwhile, Dealer’s Corner Millers Director Ibrahim Phiri said the donation was part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
Mr Phiri said he valued the partnership and support from the public, which had contributed to the growth of his business.
“We are a Christian nation, so with the little we have, we thought of sharing,” he said.
Meanwhile, 83-year-old Alifat Tembo said the gesture reminded him of the celebrations in the early days of Zambia’s Independence.
“With this parcel you have given me, I am reminded of the old days and reassured that we are still remembered. Government should continue to remember freedom fighters,” he said.
Another senior citizen, Esnart Mbewe, thanked the organisers for the gesture and appealed for continued support towards senior citizens and freedom fighters.
“I am grateful that you have helped me during this year’s Independence celebration. As a parent, I feel that you have truly thought of me. The honour and respect you have shown us are greatly appreciated. May this continue,” she said.
The hampers included mealie meal, cooking oil and salt, among other items.
