Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has threatened to target seven undersea internet cables running through the Strait of Hormuz, according to reports circulated by media outlets on Monday, amid escalating regional tensions and concerns that a wider confrontation could extend to digital infrastructure.
The reported threats come as concerns grow over the potential targeting of telecommunications networks and data centers across the Gulf, which underpin digital services, banking operations and international communications.
Previous Iranian threats have also reportedly included the possibility of targeting undersea cables and data centers linked to US technology companies operating in the region, should confrontation with Washington resume.
An attack on submarine cables could disrupt internet and telecommunications services across several countries in the region. The extent of any disruption would depend on the damage sustained and the availability of alternative routes for data transmission.
