Delhi Police has removed the iconic Jantar Mantar from the list of authorised protest sites in the Indian capital, designating three alternative venues for demonstrations.
According to an official order, Delhi Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar issued the standing order yesterday (11 October), naming Ramlila Maidan in Old Delhi, Burari Ground in north Delhi and CBD Ground in east Delhi as the new sites for protests and demonstrations.
The move comes amid heightened security in the capital, following repeated calls by political parties, youth groups and other organisations to hold protests at Jantar Mantar.
The order said the decision followed recommendations by a committee formed by the Union Home Ministry to examine alternative venues where citizens could exercise their right to organise protests and demonstrations.
The protest site on the road adjacent to the observatory has witnessed several major protests over the decades, including the Cockroach Janta Party stir on the issue of NEET exam paper leak in June-July this year that led to the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan as India's Education Minister.
The Jantar Mantar protest site is not part of the observatory, which is around 300 years old, but occupies a section of the road adjoining it. The road connects Parliament Street and Ashoka Road in a high-security area of the capital.
