The Pakistan Super League (PSL) is exploring plans to introduce a six-a-side tournament during the off-season to expand its reach and keep fans engaged throughout the year.
PSL Chief Executive Salman Naseer revealed that the proposed competition, tentatively named “PSL Sixes,” could follow a format similar to the Hong Kong Sixes. However, he clarified that the idea is still under consideration and no final decision has been made.
“Nothing is finalized, but there are some exciting plans, and one of them is a sixes tournament, called the PSL Sixes, which will be in the off-season,” Naseer said during a PSL podcast released ahead of the governing council meeting.
The proposed tournament is part of the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) efforts to keep the PSL brand active beyond its regular season while creating additional revenue opportunities for franchises and commercial partners.
It could also provide an opportunity to take PSL cricket to smaller cities that have yet to host matches in the main tournament. With fewer players and a shorter schedule, the competition would require less logistical support, making smaller venues a more practical option.
Naseer, who also serves as an adviser to PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, said the tournament could become a regular feature if the plans move forward.
“We will look into the prospect of launching this tournament, and it will be very exciting, entertaining and engaging for the fans when it becomes a recurring feature,” he said.
“Maybe even going to the smaller stadiums and smaller cities, where we have not been able to take the PSL and we know the fans are eager to watch cricket. So, a smaller event might be doable, which is what we are exploring,” he added.
However, finding a suitable window for the competition remains a challenge, particularly due to the availability of overseas players who are involved in other domestic and international tournaments.
Since its launch in 2016, the PSL has gradually expanded its presence in Pakistan. The tournament was initially held in the United Arab Emirates before matches were progressively shifted to Pakistan.
Since 2020, the entire competition has been staged in the country, with Karachi, Lahore, Multan and Rawalpindi serving as its main venues.
