Chief Justice Honourable Justice Komba Kamanda has ordered the release of eligible inmates serving sentences for minor offences at the Kailahun Correctional Facility as part of efforts to reduce prison congestion and promote access to justice.
The order followed a visit by the Chief Justice to the facility, where he reviewed the case files of inmates, including those who had already served a substantial portion of their sentences.
Among the cases examined was that of an inmate sentenced for stealing one kilogramme of cocoa valued at NLe 80. After reviewing the circumstances of the cases, Justice Kamanda ordered the release of inmates who qualified for consideration, taking into account the nature of their offences and the time they had spent in custody.
The Chief Justice cautioned the released inmates against reoffending, urging them to learn from their experiences and conduct themselves as law-abiding citizens.
The initiative forms part of broader efforts to address overcrowding in correctional facilities while ensuring that the administration of justice considers the circumstances of individual cases and the seriousness of offences committed.

The visit also highlighted the importance of reviewing cases involving minor offences to ensure that sentences and continued detention are considered in the context of each inmate’s circumstances.
