5. Vladimeri Gamkrelidze, GEO
6. Ivars Samsonoks, LAT

Title Contenders

• Magomed Ramazanov, BUL
• Ibragim Kadiev, RUS
• Arsenii Dzhioev, AZE
• Kamran Ghasempour, IRI
• Kyle Dake, USA

The above five wrestlers are all legitimate threats to win a title this year at 86 kg. Of these 5, 3 are world/Olympic champions (Magomed Ramazanov, Kamran Ghasempour, and Kyle Dake), and Arsenii Dzhioev is a world medalist. Ibragim Kadiev is the only non-senior world medalist but is only 22 years old, a two-time U20 World Champion, and one of Russia's brightest prospects. The level of high-level talent leading this weight is truly remarkable and will make 86 kg one of the best weights to watch at Worlds this year.

Magomed Ramazanov leads this group as the 2024 Olympic champion but missed almost all of last year due to injury. Back in action this year, Ramazanov has notable victories over Aeoden Sinclair (6-3), Bolat Sakayev (8-2), and Abdulmuslim Abdulmuslimov (5-0). Despite those victories, Ramazanov forfeited in the finals of the Stepan Sargsyan Cup (to Amanula Gadzhimagomedov) and in the finals of the Ulaanbaatar Open (to Mohammad Nokhodi). It's been a long time since Ramazanov's been tested against one of the best in the world. Ramazanov's lack of high-level competition makes me uncertain about what to expect from him at Worlds, but if he wrestles like he did 2 years ago, Ramazanov has the ability to stand atop the podium in Astana.

Magomed Ramazanov's win in the 2025 European Championships finals over Magomedkhabib Kadimagomedov:

Russia's Ibragim Kadiev has the potential to be Russia's next superstar. He's a two-time U20 world champion and has notable senior-level victories over Artur Naifonov (three times), Kyle Dake, Khidir Saipudinov, Arsenii Dzhioev (two times), Georgios Kougioumtsidis, and Vladimeri Gamkrelidze. In total, that's 4 different world medalists and 2 different world champs. Despite all of that success, Kadiev is 0-2 in his career against Kamran Ghasempour and recently lost to Zahid Valencia at RAF Moscow. Kadiev will be the #3 seed and will likely have to get by Ghasempour in the semis this year. Will Kadiev rise to the incredible expectations placed on him, or will he fold under the pressure again this year?

Kadiev's win over Kyle Dake at the 2026 Muhamet Malo:

Arsenii Dzhioev won world bronze last year but is still largely unknown by most casual freestyle fans. Dzhioev is 14-2 over the past year, with his only losses coming against Ibragim Kadiev (3-2 and 2-1), and he has notable victories over Kamran Ghasempour, Khidir Saipudinov, Akhmed Usmanov, Vladimeri Gamkrelidze, Kyle Dake, and Artur Naifonov. Dzhioev is also notably the last wrestler to defeat Trent Hidlay - a 5-0 decision that came back at the 2025 Zagreb Open. Those results have moved Dzhioev all the way up to #14 in our pound-for-pound rankings and make him a legitimate threat to win gold this year.

Arsenii Dzhioev's win over Kyle Dake at the 2026 Muhamet Malo:

Kamran Ghasempour is already a two-time world champion at 92 kg (2021 and 2022) but is still looking for his first title at 86 kg. Ghasempour finished with a bronze medal last year after losing to Zahid Valencia in the World semis (7-0), while recording victories over Mukul Dahiya, Ibragim Kadiev, Bambilguun Naadambat, and Mukhammad Abdullaev. It's been more than 4 years since Ghasempour won Worlds, and this year will tell us if Ghasempour can get back on top or if his best days are behind him.

Ghasempour's win over Ibragim Kadiev at the 2025 World Championships:

Kyle Dake is 35 years old and is remarkably looking to win a world title at his third different weight class. Dake, a two-time world champion at both 74 kg and 79 kg, made the world team this year by defeating defending world champion Zahid Valencia in an outstanding best-of-three series at this year's Final X. Beyond those wins, this year Dake also has significant victories over Khidir Saipudinov, Aeoden Sinclair, Parker Keckeisen (twice), Magomedkhabib Kadimagomedov (twice), and Vladimeri Gamkrelidze. Though Dake dropped matches to Ibragim Kadiev and Arsenii Dzhioev in February, I wouldn't be surprised to see Dake avenge those losses in Astana. Those matches were highly competitive, and Dake is known for his ability to make adjustments and avenge losses the second time he wrestles an opponent. Considering the past results and accolades of the wrestlers, if Dake wins this bracket, it will be the greatest performance of his senior-level career.

Kyle Dake's three-match series against Zahid Valencia at Final X:

Medal Contenders

• Vladimeri Gamkrelidze, GEO
• Malik Shavaev, KGZ
• Georgios Kougioumtsidis, GRE

2023 world silver medalist Vladimeri Gamkrelidze leads this group of medal contenders based on his results over the past year. Gamkrelidze placed 2nd at the Zagreb Open, 3rd at the European Championships, and 1st at the Budapest Ranking Series Tournament. Along with those tournament placements, Gamkrelidze recorded notable victories over Zahid Valencia, Rakhim Magamadov (twice), Eugeniu Mihalcean, Abolfazl Shamsipour, and Osman Gocen. As important as those wins are, it's important to note Gamkrelidze's only losses this year are to Parker Keckeisen (4-3), Arsenii Dzhioev (6-4), Ibragim Kadiev (9-4), and Kyle Dake (2-0). Gamkrelidze is just a slight step behind the title contenders at 86 kg, and if there's going to be an upset in this bracket, Gamkrelidze is the one that could pull it off.

Gamkrelidze's win over Zahid Valencia:

Malik Shavaev, a Russian now representing Kyrgyzstan, has never competed at a World Championships but notably won Russian Nationals back in 2021. In that tournament, Shavaev defeated world bronze medalist Radik Valiev and world champion Akhmed Usmanov. That was the best performance of Shavaev's career, but it wasn't a one-off performance. Shavaev has been active this year, competing in 6 different international tournaments and placing in 5 of those 6 tournaments. That level of consistency at a weight this deep is noteworthy and makes Shavaev a real threat to make a deep run in this bracket.

Georgios Kougioumtsidis is the final wrestler in this field that should be considered a legitimate medal threat. Kougioumtsidis won the 79 kg world title last year but has struggled slightly moving up in weight this year. Kougioumtsidis is only 6-5 since the 2025 World Championships and has yet to record a win over a world medalist at 86 kg. World-class wrestlers struggling slightly while moving up in weight isn't uncommon, and I wouldn't be surprised to see Kougioumtsidis right the ship at Worlds.

Kougioumtsidis' win in the 2025 World finals over Levi Haines:

Sleepers & Landmines

• Natsura Okazawa, JPN
• Ismail Kucuksolak, TUR

There are some really strong wrestlers in this field, including Khidir Saipudinov, Bolat Sakayev, Rakhim Magamadov, and Boris Makoev. All of these wrestlers have been in the game for a while and have some legitimate accomplishments. However, in a field this deep, I don't consider those four wrestlers to be medal contenders, and they're certainly not "sleepers." The above two wrestlers fit this final category much better.

Natsura Okazawa finished third at the 2026 U20 World Championships this year with victories over Askhab Khajiyev (who just beat Zahid Valencia), Diachi Papinashvili (13-2), Tejvir Dhinsa (10-0), and Arun Arun (10-0), while only losing a close 7-6 match to Aeoden Sinclair. Okazawa has potent leg attacks highlighted by his strength and speed. Even in his loss to Sinclair, Okazawa got out to a quick 6-0 lead off three takedowns, and Sinclair looked like he had no answers for Okazawa's offense. Okazawa's one weakness is his poor cardio, but if he can shore up that weakness, Okazawa has the skills to defeat one of the contenders in this field.

Ismail Kucuksolak is another wrestler that fits the "Sleepers & Landmines" category. Kucuksolak is coming off a silver medal at the 2026 Mediterranean Games, where he lost to Georgios Kougioumtsidis in the finals but defeated Gabriel Iglesias and Rakhim Magamadov. On top of that performance, Kucuksolak placed third at the Budapest Ranking Series Tournament in July, losing only to Malik Shavaev but defeating Krisztian Biro and Eugeniu Mihalcean. I wouldn't pick Kucuksolak to medal in this bracket, but I think he can defeat some of the more experienced and credentialed wrestlers at 86 kg.

86 kg World Championship Predictions

86 kg might be the most challenging weight for me to predict of the entire World Championships this year. I could make a legitimate case for each of the five title contenders to win gold this year. I've gone back and forth, but I'm picking Ibragim Kadiev to win gold in Astana. I think Kadiev has the best offense of anyone in the bracket, and since he's so young, I think he's only getting better. Is Kyle Dake good enough to win? Absolutely. However, I'm leaning toward youth over experience to win this bracket in Kazakhstan.
