3 Knicks most to blame for Opening Night loss to LeBron James’ 76ers appeared first on ClutchPoints. Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Opening Night was supposed to be a celebration of everything the New York Knicks had accomplished. Instead, the Madison Square Garden festivities ended with a frustrating 106-100 loss to LeBron James’ Philadelphia 76ers. It turned a banner-raising occasion into an early-season reality check. The Knicks’ offseason had been built around preserving the championship-winning core and maintaining continuity. Tuesday, though, exposed familiar concerns about shot selection, secondary scoring, and offensive composure. Three players, in particular, must shoulder much of the blame.
New York carried a four-point advantage into halftime but completely lost its offensive rhythm after the break. They managed just 18 points in the third quarter before Philadelphia closed the period with an 11-0 run punctuated by consecutive Jaylen Brown three-pointers. Tyrese Maxey then took charge down the stretch. He finished with a game-high 28 points as the Sixers completed their comeback. The Knicks shot just 37.2 percent from the field and committed 14 turnovers. They wasted a golden opportunity to defend their home court against an Eastern Conference rival.
OG Anunoby
Anunoby’s reputation as one of the NBA’s premier two-way wings made his Opening Night performance especially disappointing. The Knicks needed his defensive versatility against Philadelphia’s dangerous perimeter attack. They also needed his outside shooting to prevent the Sixers from crowding Jalen Brunson. New York received neither.

Anunoby finished with just 10 points on 3-of-12 shooting, including a disastrous 1-of-9 from beyond the arc. Those misses were damaging enough, but his difficulties became even more concerning when he struggled to contain Brown. The latter finished with 19 points, eight rebounds, and six assists.
Anunoby’s team-worst minus-20 rating in 32 minutes further illustrated the damage. It reinforced the impression that the Knicks were consistently losing ground during his extended stretches on the floor. One poor game does not erase Anunoby’s considerable value, of course. However, New York cannot afford its most important perimeter defenders to become offensive liabilities while simultaneously failing to deliver their usual defensive impact.
Mikal Bridges
If Anunoby struggled conspicuously, Bridges’ disappointing performance was defined by his absence from the action. The Knicks scored only 100 points, and Bridges contributed just four of them across 33 minutes. He shot 2-of-8 from the field, attempted no free throws, and recorded zero assists. Bridges finished with a minus-15 rating.
Those numbers are difficult to defend for a player expected to provide dependable perimeter production alongside Brunson. Philadelphia’s defensive attention increasingly focused on New York’s primary ball-handler. That created opportunities for Bridges to attack closeouts and generate offense when the initial action broke down. Instead, he too often appeared content to defer. He allowed possessions to stagnate while the Sixers recovered defensively.
Bridges does not need to score 25 points every night to justify his role. His value also comes from movement, defensive versatility, and keeping the offense flowing. But four points without a meaningful playmaking contribution is simply insufficient. The Knicks need Bridges to be aggressive without becoming reckless. Here, he was vanilla in the worst way possible.
Jalen Brunson
Brunson deserves considerable credit for helping transform the Knicks into championship contenders. That status, though, also brings heightened expectations. When Philadelphia disrupted New York’s offense, Brunson repeatedly tried to solve things by himself. That was problematic.
Brunson finished with 21 points and converted all eight of his free throws. However, he needed 19 field-goal attempts to produce that total. His 6-of-19 shooting reflected an inefficient night. His three assists against two turnovers offered little evidence of the offensive orchestration New York needed.
Philadelphia’s defensive pressure made Brunson’s preferred driving lanes increasingly crowded. Sadly, he too often settled into difficult attempts against a defense prepared to challenge him.
That approach became particularly costly during the second-half collapse. Once the Sixers seized momentum, the Knicks needed purposeful movement and better shot quality. Brunson’s isolation-heavy possessions instead allowed Philadelphia to remain comfortable defensively.
Final verdict
The Knicks should obviously not panic after one defeat. Still, their Opening Night loss exposed three performances that demand immediate improvement. Anunoby struggled on both ends, Bridges failed to provide essential secondary production, and Brunson’s inefficient shot selection contributed to New York’s offensive stagnation.
Philadelphia deserves credit for executing its comeback, particularly during the decisive third-quarter run. Still, the Knicks had enough opportunities to protect their halftime lead and failed to capitalize.
Championship expectations leave little room for complacency. New York’s core remains talented enough to compete with the Eastern Conference’s best. That said, potential means little if New York’s key players cannot adapt when the offense stalls.
