EXCLUSIVE: With Wednesday recently wrapping production, Tim Burton may already have his eyes set on what’s next on the feature side as sources tell Deadline he is teaming Nobel Prize-winning author Kazuo Ishiguro on new untitled film. Insiders say the film is still in development but the plan is for Burton to direct from a script by Ishiguro.
As with anything Burton related, plot details are being kept under wraps though multiple sources say it would be set in post World War II Japan. Sources also say this an original script by Ishiguro and not based on a previous or upcoming novel. The film currently has no distributor and the likely plan is to package it with talent once its ready and take it to market.
While it has not been confirmed whether this would be the director’s next film since it is technically still in development, it is a project he has given the most attention to since production on Wednesday recently ended. Besides Burton and Ishiguro, no other talent are attached at this time.
As for Ishiguro, while he is best known for his acclaimed novels like Never Let Me Go and Klara and the Sun, he has dabbled in screenwriting, most recently penning the script to Living starring Bill Nighy. The pairing of the two feels like a unique yet perfect fit that is sure to draw attention from A-list talent from across town.
Speaking of talent, the two also share a connection with a certain A-lister as Wednesday star Jenna Ortega is set to star in the feature adapation of Ishiguro’s Klara and the Sun, directed by Taika Waititi, which bows next week.
We will share more details as more is unveiled on this project.
