With the UK Autumn Budget approaching and speculation continuing over what the Chancellor may announce, people considering a move to Portugal have an opportunity this week to speak directly with specialists about the financial, tax, legal and practical implications of relocating.
The Portuguese Chamber of Commerce in the UK’s Moving to Portugal Show and Seminars takes place this Thursday, October 15, at the Pestana Chelsea Bridge Hotel in London, with only a few remaining places now available.
The timing is particularly relevant. The Show takes place just 13 days before the UK’s Autumn Budget on October 28, at a time when taxation, pensions, savings, property and inheritance planning are among the areas attracting considerable attention ahead of the Chancellor’s announcement.
While nobody yet knows precisely what measures will be introduced, for people already considering relocating, buying property or reorganising their financial affairs between the UK and Portugal, the current uncertainty makes understanding their current position particularly important.
Understanding the differences between the UK and Portugal
For people contemplating an international move, one of the most important things to understand is that the UK and Portuguese tax systems can treat income, pensions, investments and inheritance very differently.
Portugal can offer some particularly interesting options. For example, there is no UK-style inheritance tax on asset transfers to a spouse or civil partner, children, grandchildren, parents or grandparents, who are generally exempt from the 10% Stamp Duty applicable to other beneficiaries.
Questions surrounding pensions, investments, tax residence, inheritance planning, property ownership and the movement of capital can therefore become particularly important when deciding not simply whether to move to Portugal, but also when and how to structure that move.
The Show gives visitors the opportunity to explore these differences by speaking with specialists. rather than relying on general information or assumptions about how the UK rules will translate into Portugal.
Understand your options before the Budget
Rather than attempting to predict what the Chancellor may announce, the Moving to Portugal Show gives visitors the opportunity to speak directly with specialists who understand both the UK and Portuguese systems and can explain the areas that should be considered when planning a move.
Throughout the day, visitors will be able to meet experts covering Portuguese property, taxation, pensions and wealth management, legal matters, foreign exchange and relocation, alongside representatives from different regions and developments across Portugal.
Two seminar programmes, running from 11am to 1pm and from 4pm to 6pm, will examine many of the questions facing British residents considering Portugal. Visitors can also speak directly with participating specialists about the issues most relevant to their own circumstances.
Christina Hippisley, General Manager of the Portuguese Chamber of Commerce in the UK, said: “Whenever there is speculation ahead of a Budget, it is very easy for people to react to individual headlines. Moving country, however, is a significant decision and it is important to understand the facts and take appropriate professional advice.”
“The timing of Thursday’s Show is particularly useful because people can speak directly with experts before the Autumn Budget and understand the areas that may be relevant to their own plans. There are also important differences between the UK and Portugal when it comes to areas such as inheritance, pensions, residency and taxation, so knowing how these might apply to your own circumstances is an important part of planning a move.”
“Whether someone is only beginning to consider Portugal or already intends to make the move, this is an opportunity to ask questions and get a much clearer picture of the tax, financial, legal and property considerations involved.”
More than finding a property
Portugal continues to attract British residents considering relocation, retirement, property ownership and investment, but making the move involves considerably more than deciding where to live.
For some, Portugal’s approach to inheritance may form part of the attraction. For others, the priorities may be pensions, investment planning, property, residency or simply understanding the financial implications of becoming resident in another country.
The Chamber stresses that the approaching Budget should not encourage people to make rushed decisions. Instead, the London Show provides an opportunity to understand the differences between the two countries, identify the questions that need to be asked and speak to specialists before making important financial or lifestyle choices.
