Russia builds giant radar in its territory within NATO's eastern flank

Russia has built a giant radar system within NATO's eastern flank that is reportedly capable of detecting aircraft, missiles and naval vessels up to 2,000 miles away.

The system could be used to monitor targets deep into northern and western Europe, including the UK, expanding Russia's surveillance capabilities across the continent.

Satellite images show the radar is located in Kaliningrad, the heavily militarised Baltic enclave just 20 miles from the Polish border and 40 miles from Lithuania.

According to The Times, the system has 'three radiating arms of antenna masts, each roughly 500 metres long'.

These appear to be part of an over-the-horizon (OTH) radar, a system with the ability to detect targets at very long ranges.

OTH radars are so powerful they can create wavelengths longer than 10m, which is ten times longer than standard long-range radars used for surveillance.

At high frequency, these are bounced off the upper atmosphere to detect targets that are out of sight.

The system based in the town of Gvardeysk, Kaliningrad, could have a range of between 550 and 2,000 miles away.

The latest satellite images, taken by spacecraft company Iceye, reveal how the Russian enclave is being developed as a site for sophisticated military technology.

Iceye has contracts with the Ukrainian defence ministry and supplies Kyiv with intelligence via satellites.

Since the outbreak of war in 2022, Kaliningrad has continued to wreak havoc for vessels and aircraft in Europe due to GPS interference.

Over the past four years, Lithuania estimates that Moscow has developed at least 36 'spoofing' antennae across the enclave.

Alongside radar technology, Kaliningrad is linked to missiles and air defence systems as well as the Russian navy's Baltic fleet.

The development comes after the Russian embassy in London threatened the West with nuclear war if it attacks the Kremlin's European outpost of Kaliningrad.

The warning was issued on the embassy's social media channels in response to a new TV show about a fictional scenario in which Russia attacks the UK.

Major figures including Michael Gove, Dame Penny Mordaunt and former UK ambassador to the US Kim Darroch starred in the programme, The Wargame.

During the Sky show, the prime minister played by Gove orders a retaliatory attack against Murmansk and Kaliningrad.

The Russian Embassy in London warned: 'Those advocating plans to blockade or strike Kaliningrad should have no illusions about the consequences.

'Any British or NATO military action against Russian territory would be met with a response using all means at Russia’s disposal, including nuclear weapons.

Murmansk is a vitally strategic part of Russia's mainland, home to the nation's Northern Fleet.

Kaliningrad is a Russian exclave between NATO members Poland and Lithuania that has been touted as a possible launch location for the Kremlin's nuclear missiles.

The embassy added: 'Russia has repeatedly made clear that it neither seeks confrontation with NATO and Europe nor intends to attack them.

'But should anyone choose to unleash such a conflict, they must be under no illusion that Russia will respond accordingly.'

The embassy's post also referenced a piece written in the i Paper, which described Kaliningrad as Vladimir Putin's 'greatest weakness'.
