Liverpool sporting director Julian Ward has the chance to do something crazy. There's world-class talent just waiting for the Reds.
Liverpool are weighing up transfer targets once again ahead of the January window and beyond. Though, that is a constant process and especially when the current squad looks and feels so imbalanced.
We also see a clear strategy in Liverpool's recruitment. They're targeting young players, hoping to get ahead of the curve for the next generation and sign players just before they explode at a big club.
Will that work? Time will tell. But they clearly believe it can work and that's led to some major signings that have raised eyebrows.
And if it's a process they're hoping to continue with, we feel they've got to have eyes on one club in particular. There's world-class talent there just waiting to be snapped up.
From Como to Liverpool
Como shocked everyone last season as they continued their rapid rise in Serie A, qualifying for the UEFA Champions League. It was a miraculous job by Cesc Fabregas but also by the club’s recruitment team.
Como have focused heavily on young players, building a team out of players who weren’t necessarily getting a look-in elsewhere. The results have been fantastic - and it makes them a natural target for clubs looking for the next big thing.
Nico Paz is arguably the standout, with Lucas Da Cunha breaking into the France setup this season. Martin Baturina had a fantastic season, too, as did Maximo Perrone. Defensively, Jacobo Ramon was one of the absolute best in Europe at centre-back.
Assane Diao is stepping up into that group this season, having started incredibly. And none of these players are over 24! Paz and Ramon aren’t even 23.
They’ve been so good and so valuable that Liverpool will naturally look at everything Como has to offer. Several, if not all, of the group are in the verge of major moves, just waiting to be signed for big money.
They’re genuinely world-class talents and there’s next to no chance that Como hold onto them all. Signing one, or going crazier and signing two or three, could be the smartest way forward in Liverpool’s youth-focused project.
