SUWON — Samsung Electronics Chairman Jay Y. Lee and other senior Samsung Group executives visited the family burial ground to pay their respects to the late Samsung Chairman Lee Kun-hee ahead of the sixth anniversary of his death.
Lee arrived at the burial ground in Imok-dong, Jangan-gu, Suwon, Gyeonggi Province, at about 9 a.m. on the 23rd, two days before the anniversary. After making his way through reporters and crowds, he laid a bouquet of flowers before the grave and bowed his head and knelt in tribute.
Lee was the first to arrive at the site of the memorial, which was to be attended by family members including Hong Ra-hee, honorary director of the Leeum Museum of Art, as well as the presidents of Samsung's main affiliates. About 40 minutes later, beginning around 9:38 a.m., the presidents arrived in succession in at least four vehicles. The memorial, joined by family members and other attendees, was expected to proceed without a formal ceremony, consisting simply of paying tribute to the deceased.
With family members and executives gathered in one place, attention is also focused on any message Lee may deliver. At the 2022 memorial, Lee said, "Now is the time to step forward more boldly and with greater willingness to take on challenges," adding, "The harder and more difficult the times, the more we must prepare ahead and build up our capabilities."
Lee and the presidents were expected to have lunch together after the visit at the Changjo Hall of the Samsung Human Resources Development Center in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province. The hall, a training facility for Samsung's new employees, houses a bust of the late chairman.
