The WNBA has reached multiple major viewership records and milestones during the 2026 season. And as it appears, more milestones are still arriving, with only a handful of Finals games remaining to be played.
The latest came in Game 1 of the 2026 WNBA Finals between the Golden State Valkyries and Atlanta Dream. As reported by Front Office Sports’ Colin Salao, Game 1 drew 2.1 million viewers on NBC and Peacock and peaked at 3.0 million, making it the most-watched Game 1 in WNBA Finals history, according to NBC. The figure represents an 11 percent jump from last year, when the Finals drew 1.9 million viewers on ESPN for the Phoenix Mercury versus Las Vegas Aces series.
That milestone, however, comes with one notable caveat: it excludes 1997, the league’s inaugural season, when the one-game championship format drew 2.85 million viewers on NBC. But within the modern Finals format, the 2.1 million average officially ranks as the second-most-watched WNBA Finals game of any kind in the past 25 years, sitting just behind the 2.15 million viewers who tuned into the winner-take-all Game 5 between the New York Liberty and Minnesota Lynx in 2024.
Beyond the milestone itself, the number also carries particular significance for NBC. Game 1 marked the network’s first WNBA Finals broadcast in 24 years, their last championship presentation dating all the way back to Aug. 31, 2002. They will also air Game 4, and may well end up adding another viewership milestone to the tally before the series is done.
Speaking of milestones, the WNBA has actually taken the time to outline the massive surge in audience engagement it experienced this season, with several figures setting new records. As shared by WNBA Communications on X, nationally televised games reached a record audience of more than 91 million viewers, doubling the league’s reach in 2025.
Alongside that, a record 51 telecasts averaged at least one million viewers, nearly tripling the 19 that reached that threshold in 2025. Nine telecasts also averaged over two million viewers, up from four the previous season. And in total, fans consumed more than 320 million hours of regular-season coverage, the highest total in WNBA history.
The league’s global reach also expanded dramatically. WNBA games and programming reached fans in 214 countries and territories across 25 different languages. Global minutes watched on Amazon Prime Video jumped by nearly 200 percent, reaching audiences across 240 countries and territories. And the league’s digital platforms amassed a record four billion social video views, a 28 percent increase from 2025.
Reflecting on the viewership achievements recorded so far this season, outgoing WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert expressed pride in the league’s progress, especially as the 2026 campaign marked the league’s 30th anniversary.
“The league’s 30th season has been one to remember, with extraordinary fan engagement, record viewership, packed arenas, and spectacular basketball,” Engelbert said in a statement. “For three decades, generations of players, teams, fans, and so many others have dedicated themselves to building this league and making a season like this possible.”
“There is tremendous pride in what we’ve accomplished together, and even greater excitement for all that lies ahead,” she added.
She also reflected on the commercial and digital transformation she oversaw during her tenure, highlighting the league’s struggles when she first took office before outlining how it has evolved into a more digitally driven business with a stronger infrastructure for audience engagement.
“It was really a great story of how you build a business that, quite frankly, when I came in, was struggling financially, struggling with digital,” Engelbert said. “We had no social, we had no digital, we had 25,000 outdated pages on WNBA.com. All that stuff has been transformed, and we have such a strong team, including engineers and data analytics and data scientists and things like that.”
It has indeed been one of the most transformative periods in WNBA history under Cathy Engelbert. And with record-breaking viewership still happening in the thrilling final games of the season, perhaps there could yet be more milestones to add to an already historic season.
