Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Eldoret has placed one individual under a 21-day quarantine following contact tracing linked to confirmed Ebola cases in Kenya, with the hospital's chief executive moving to reassure a concerned public.

MTRH CEO Dr. Phillip Kirwa told the public on Thursday, October 22, 2026, that the quarantined individual had not been diagnosed with the virus.
"We have no Ebola-infected patients. Quarantine is not equal to being an infected person," Dr. Kirwa said.
What the quarantine means
Dr. Kirwa explained that people who may have been exposed to Ebola are monitored throughout the incubation period, which lasts up to 21 days, to check whether symptoms develop.
If none appear within that window, the individual is cleared and released.
The person was identified through contact tracing connected to confirmed cases and placed in isolation as a standard precautionary measure, not as a result of a confirmed diagnosis.
Laboratory capacity
To support diagnosis and patient management, a dedicated laboratory has been established at the Kenyatta National Hospital Infectious Disease Unit in Nairobi. The facility handles routine tests for patients receiving Ebola-related care.
Dr. Kirwa urged members of the public to remain calm and to understand the distinction between precautionary public-health measures and a confirmed Ebola infection, stressing that isolation protocols are a routine response tool and not an indication that a quarantined person is sick.
Kenya's Ebola situation
Meanwhile, according to a joint update issued by the Africa CDC and Kenya's Ministry of Health as of October 21, 2026, Kenya had recorded 9 confirmed Ebola cases, forming one known cluster.
Of those, 8 patients are reported to be improving and stable, while one death has been recorded in the first identified case.
Contact tracing efforts have been extensive: 134 of 135 identified contacts have been traced and placed under quarantine, representing a 99.3% tracing rate. The first group of contacts is expected to complete the 21-day monitoring period on October 25, 2026.
