The Chiefs tight end caught a screen pass and, after gaining a few yards, went to the ground in pain following the tackle. The veteran player got back up with difficulty and quickly headed to the sideline to be evaluated by Kansas City’s medical staff.
Kelce received treatment during the Chiefs’ first possession and was forced to briefly leave the field. Cameras showed him removing his shoe while trainers worked on the affected area and applied a wrap to his right ankle.
The injury forced Kelce to miss the final two plays of the drive. In his absence, Noah Gray caught a 16-yard pass on third down, but it was not enough to move the chains, forcing Kansas City to settle for a 44-yard field goal by Harrison Butker.
According to Pete Sweeney of The Kansas City Star, Kelce appeared extremely frustrated on the sideline immediately after the injury. The report also noted that the team did not use the blue medical evaluation tent, while Sam McDowell reported that the veteran tight end was “feeling it” after the play.

Near the end of the first quarter, CBS sideline reporter Melanie Collins reported that Kelce’s ankle tape was reinforced after he returned to the field for Kansas City’s second offensive possession.
Although the situation sparked concern among Chiefs fans, Kelce returned to the field and, for now, remains involved in the game as the team continues to monitor his condition.
