A proposed budget cut of over 30.8 billion pesos to the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) for the 2027 fiscal year is being labeled a “critical blow” to the Yucatán Peninsula, a region already suffering from a saturated and neglected power grid.
Deputy Gaspar Quintal Parra has called for an immediate halt to what he describes as “budgetary punishment” for Yucatecan families. He argues that the cuts come at a time when residents are already plagued by constant blackouts and service interruptions that have intensified since the current administration took office.
“It is unacceptable that while households suffer from continuous service suspensions, lose their appliances, and see their small businesses suffer, the federal government’s response is to slash resources destined for the country’s energy infrastructure,” Quintal Parra criticized.
The legislator emphasized that electricity is not a luxury but a fundamental right necessary to sustain quality of life, daily work, and the economic development currently being severely hampered by daily outages. He warned that reducing the CFE’s budget directly shifts the cost of government inefficiency onto the pockets of the citizenry.
Quintal Parra further noted that the proposed 8.5% reduction in funding reflects a “grave planning error,” especially as demand for electricity continues to rise. He is demanding a priority reassignment of resources to strengthen the state’s electrical infrastructure, an urgent preventive maintenance plan for distribution lines, and the creation of a direct compensation mechanism on electricity bills to repair damage caused to household appliances.
