Virginia hosts Duke on Friday, hoping to avenge its defeat in last year’s ACC Championship game, where the Blue Devils ended their 39-year search for a conference title. Both teams sit on four wins apiece overall so far this term but have also struggled for consistency since conference play got underway.
Manny Diaz’s ACC titleholders look particularly despairing after consecutive losses to Georgia Tech and North Carolina in the past two outings. Fifth-year Virginia head coach Tony Elliott has won two of his three regular-season matchups in this head-to-head, including a 30-27 victory in Charlottesville two years ago, the only other time the Cavs have hosted this fixture since he’s been in charge.
Duke running back Nate Sheppard leads the team in both rushing (eight) and receiving touchdowns (four), clocking up 820 rush yards so far this year, which puts him sixth in the nation. Meanwhile, Virginia quarterback Beau Pribula is hunting a rebound result after last week’s loss at SMU saw him fail to record a scoring pass for the first time this season.
