Key Facts
- Oil jumped on Thursday with Brent crude up 2.4% to US$109 a barrel as Middle East supply fears intensified, a direct cost shock for fuel-importing Latin economies
- Technology shares led a global sell-off with the Nasdaq down 2.6% and Asian benchmarks from Tokyo to Seoul sliding in early Friday trading, setting a cautious tone for Brazilian and Mexican equities
- Mexico’s inflation surprised higher with mid-month consumer prices rising 0.41% against the 0.37% consensus, complicating the central bank’s room to ease rates
- Brazil’s real entered the session pressured as the stronger dollar and risk-averse global mood tested foreign appetite for local assets ahead of today’s mid-month inflation report
- The Ibovespa is part of a regional story with Chile’s IPSA, Mexico’s IPC, Colombia’s COLCAP and Argentina’s Merval all lower as the tape turned defensive
- Prediction markets Polymarket traders put Flávio Bolsonaro’s chance of winning the 25 October runoff at 76.8% and Lula’s at 23.5%, as of 11:34 p.m. ET on Thursday, 22 October.
Today’s Focus
The overnight tape delivered two shocks at once: a sharp sell-off in technology shares and a fresh spike in oil prices, driven by Middle East supply risks.
That combination is uncomfortable for Latin America — a region of fuel importers and portfolio-flow recipients — and no major exchange escaped the retreat.
Brazil’s Ibovespa fell over 1% in the prior session, while Chilean, Mexican, Colombian and Argentine indices also declined.
Today’s open hinges on whether Brazil’s mid-month inflation print and Mexico’s activity data can steady the mood, or whether the tech and oil cross-currents dominate trading.

01 The overnight tape in one read
The mood darkened overnight after US technology shares sold off hard, dragging Asian benchmarks lower — Japan’s Nikkei and South Korea’s KOSPI fell sharply in early Friday trading.
Europe followed with broad declines, while Brent crude rose 2.4% to US$109 on Thursday as Middle East supply risks escalated, adding an inflation pulse to an already defensive tape.
The dollar stayed firm against a basket of major currencies, keeping pressure on emerging-market assets that rely on foreign capital.
US data added to the firm tone: initial jobless claims fell to 194,000 against a 200,000 forecast (RT economic calendar, RT). A resilient labour market keeps US interest rates in focus for emerging-market currencies.
For Latin America, the picture is a double squeeze: a tech-led retreat dampens risk appetite, while pricier oil raises the cost of imported fuel and complicates inflation fights.
Assessment — Defensive, with oil the wildcard MEDIUM
The evidence points to a defensive open: the dollar remains firm, US futures are lower, and regional indices closed on the back foot. Higher oil complicates the picture by supporting energy exporters like Petrobras while squeezing fuel importers and pressuring inflation expectations. The variable to watch is whether Brazil’s IPCA mid-month inflation print and Mexico’s economic activity data can shift the narrative away from global risk aversion.
02 The board before the open
| Instrument | Level | Change | Read |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oil (Brent) | $109.03 | +2.35% | Supply fear, not demand joy |
| Nasdaq | 26,009 | −2.60% | Tech rout drives the tape |
| S&P 500 | 7,663 | −1.21% | Broader US equity retreat |
| Dollar Index | 101.67 | −0.10% | Firm but not surging |
| US 10Y yield | 4.957% | −17 bp | Bond bids, not risk-on |
The board shows a market caught between two stories: oil’s sharp rise reflects genuine supply worries, but the moves in equities and bond yields point to investors pulling back from risk.
For Latin American exporters of oil and metals, higher commodity prices offer a cushion; for importers and those exposed to foreign equity flows, the tape is a headwind.

03 What the data shows — B3’s board turned defensive
| Stock | Move | Turnover | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| SAUD3 | +4.2% | R$149m | A rare gainer, not part of the tech slide |
| BBSE3 | +2.0% | R$314m | Insurance steadied |
| PRIO3 | +1.9% | R$565m | Oil producer, energy support |
| CVCB3 | −7.5% | R$34m | Travel stock, sentiment-driven |
| AMER3 | −7.2% | R$21m | Consumer and credit stress |
The B3 scan shows a defensive board, with Petrobras-related oil names among the few supported areas despite the broader sell-off in Brazilian shares.
The losers in consumer and travel illustrate how quickly risk appetite can evaporate when global tech leads the tape lower.
Standout gainers like SAUD3, up over 4%, were outliers against a backdrop where the main Brazilian index fell more than 1%.
04 Brazil and the currencies
The real is a key pressure point: the dollar strengthened against the Brazilian currency in the previous session, and the combination of a firm US dollar and risk-off equity sentiment makes foreign inflows harder to sustain.
The Selic, Brazil’s benchmark interest rate, matters here — high local rates can cushion the real, but they also make equities more sensitive to capital outflows when global risk appetite sours.
Also due today at 14:45 Lisbon (9:45 a.m. in New York), the US S&P Global PMIs: forecasts are 55.5 for manufacturing (previous 55.9), 58.0 for services (previous 58.8) and 57.6 for the composite index (previous 58.4). Uruguay’s unemployment rate is forecast at 7.4% (previous 7.2%) and Paraguay’s central bank announces its interest rate decision, with the 5.5% rate expected to stay unchanged.
Today’s mid-month inflation reading will be important: a figure above the 0.43% consensus would reinforce caution and could unsettle local rate-cut hopes.
Across the region, the Mexican, Chilean, Colombian and Argentine pesos all face the same basic test — whether the oil shock and tech rout push global capital away from emerging markets altogether.
05 The regional setup
| Index | Country | Change |
|---|---|---|
| IPSA | Chile | −1.88% |
| IPC | Mexico | −1.25% |
| COLCAP | Colombia | −1.25% |
| Ibovespa | Brazil | −1.15% |
| Merval | Argentina | −1.50% |
No Latin American exchange escaped the sell-off: Chile’s IPSA fell the most, while Brazil’s Ibovespa held up best, down 1.15%.
The pattern is consistent with a global pullback rather than a domestic story — the common factor across all five indices is the weaker US equity tape and the stronger dollar.
Mexico’s mid-month inflation rate rose 0.41% against a 0.37% forecast and 0.33% before, while the core inflation rate rose 0.25% against 0.18% expected (RT economic calendar, RT). The annual mid-month inflation rate reached 3.62% against 3.60% forecast and 3.42% before, and annual core inflation 3.78% against 3.7% forecast.
Mexico’s unemployment rate for September fell to 2.8%, below the 3.0% forecast and the 3.0% before. Together, the price and jobs surprises limit the room for Banxico, the central bank, to cut interest rates and could keep Mexican assets under pressure.
In Argentina, retail sales (forecast 27%, previous 23%) and consumer confidence (forecast 41.5, previous 41.8) were scheduled for Thursday, but no published figures were available in our calendar when this report was written.
06 The technical picture
The Ibovespa sits below its recent peak, with the prior session’s decline taking it further from its 52-week high, though still some way above its lowest levels of the past year.
The real has moved off its weakest point of the year but remains in a range where every uptick in the dollar triggers local concern.
Mexico’s index is also below its yearly high, tracking the global tech-led fall in equities, while the dollar-peso pair is sensitive to both the US yield story and local inflation data due today.
07 What to watch
- Brazilian mid-month inflation: A surprise above the 0.43% consensus would hit local rate-cut hopes and pressure the real further
- Mexico’s economic activity data: Falling activity alongside higher inflation would create a stagflationary tone for Mexican assets
- Oil prices through the session: Sustained gains above US$110 for Brent would lift energy names like Petrobras but deepen inflation fears for importers
- US Treasury yields: A further slide in the 10-year yield would signal flight-to-safety flows, pulling capital away from emerging markets

What Prediction Markets Say
Traders on Polymarket, a prediction market where people bet real money, put Flávio Bolsonaro’s chance of winning the 25 October runoff at 76.8 percent and Lula’s at 23.5 percent at 11:34 p.m. ET on Thursday, 22 October. About US$192.3 million had been traded on that market.
Kalshi, a prediction market regulated in the United States by the CFTC, the federal derivatives regulator, showed 76 percent for Flávio and 24 percent for Lula at the same time. These prices are bets by traders, not polls, and they can move within minutes of a debate or a new survey. The official result will come from Brazil’s electoral court, the TSE.
Why we show this: prediction markets turn real-money bets into a live probability that moves within minutes of the news, which is why investors, campaigns and newsrooms in the United States now follow them closely. We show them next to polls and official results, never instead of them.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did Asian markets fall so hard?
They were following a sharp sell-off in US technology shares, with the Nasdaq dropping about 2.6% and dragging down global risk appetite.
How does the oil spike affect Latin America?
Higher oil prices help exporters like Petrobras and Pemex but raise fuel import costs and inflation pressures across the region.
What is the Selic and why does it matter?
The Selic is Brazil’s central bank benchmark interest rate; high rates can support the real but make equities more exposed to global outflows.
Which regional index held up best?
Brazil’s Ibovespa, falling 1.15% in the prior session, while Chile’s IPSA dropped the most at 1.88%.
