MENDON — Zak Iobe of Mendon has been voted as this week's Footballer of the Week. Iobe, a senior for the Hornets, brings home the honor, which is presented weekly by our good friends out at Glen Oaks Community College.
Congratulations to Zak. He earned the nomination by helping lead the top-ranked Hornets to a win last Friday over state-ranked Climax-Scotts.
He rumbled through the children of the corn and had a huge impact on the game.
Mendon won 28-24 over their rival Panthers. Climax-Scotts led the game well into the fourth quarter, but Iobe and the Hornets showed why they have been ranked atop the 8-player, Division 2 rankings this year by coming back to win on the road.

Iobe scored on runs of one, four, seven and one yard again in the contest. Rumbling through the Panthers, Iobe finished with 22 carries for 104 yards total in the game. He was also a menace on the defensive side of the ball, finishing with nine tackles to lead the Hornets.
In terms of voting, Iobe also ran away with the win.
He finished with 6,226 total votes cast in our weekly poll. That was good for just over 60 percent of all the votes cast for Athlete of the Week honors.
Darren Speelman of Sturgis, who caught three TD passes last week in a Trojan victory, finished second with more than 21 percent of the total vote. Maddix Jancasz of Constantine earned more than 16 percent of the vote as well to finish third. There were more than 10,400 total votes this week.
Footballer of the Week, presented weekly by Glen Oaks Community College, returns Sunday evening with a fresh batch from this week's football games.
