Tour documentaries are nothing new. But shooting one — even a short — on Ray-Ban Meta glasses is a new way to do it.
On Oct. 23, the day after she takes the stage at Kia Forum in Los Angeles, Doja Cat will drop Ma Vie World Tour in partnership with Ray-Ban Meta. It’s a roughly 12-minute short filmed almost entirely on Ray-Ban Meta glasses and shot from the perspective of Doja Cat and members of her crew on the current tour.
It was helmed by noted director Quinn Whitney Wilson, who previously directed the forthcoming feature doc Jean-Michel Basquiat about the iconic artist, shows like Ziwe, Your Attention Please and MPower and music videos for artists like Lizzo and Baby Ariel. The footage captured finds Doja revealing what it’s like to hit the stage on tour with all the behind-the-scenes shots that fans have come to love from these types of tour documentaries, like waiting in the wings before showtime and backstage with members of her inner circle.
“Doja leaves everything on that stage for her fans, and getting to build a doc style piece around that energy was a dream. We shot on Ray-Ban Meta glasses, which let us capture the tour from the inside, through Doja’s eyes and through the eyes of the team that makes it all happen. It’s an intimate, unfiltered look at Tour Ma Vie that drops you right into the chaos, the craft, and the love she pours into every single show,” said Wilson in a statement provided to The Hollywood Reporter.
The short will debut on Doja Cat’s YouTube, a channel that counts north of 14 million subscribers. But wait there’s more: Ray-Ban Meta is also an official partner of the Tour Ma Vie, and she’s been sporting five custom Ray-Ban Meta glasses which were designed by her creative director Brett Alan Nelson, who helped curate the spectacles into her looks and show choreography. Fans who can’t get to Kia Forum, or even those who can, will be able to check out the custom frames on display with three tour looks at Meta Lab Los Angeles on Melrose Avenue next week.
