Pakistan is in talks to adopt Lark, a workplace messaging and productivity platform developed by ByteDance, the Chinese technology company that owns TikTok. Exclusive to TechJuice, the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication held a meeting to discuss the platform’s adoption, with most of the arrangements reportedly nearing finalization.
The development could bring ByteDance’s workplace collaboration tools to Pakistan’s public sector. Lark combines messaging, video meetings, document editing, calendars, email, and project management in a single platform.
What Is Lark and How Does It Work?
Lark is an all-in-one workplace platform designed to help organizations manage communication and daily operations. It brings together features commonly associated with services such as Slack, Microsoft Word, and other office productivity tools.
The platform allows teams to communicate through individual and group chats, hold video meetings, create and share documents, and manage schedules. It also offers project management, workflow automation, and tools for organizing information across teams.
By bringing these services together, Lark aims to reduce the need to switch between multiple applications. Its tools can help organizations coordinate tasks, share information, and manage internal workflows from one workspace.
ByteDance introduced Lark as an enterprise product in 2019, initially launching it in Japan and Singapore. The company developed the platform to improve workplace communication and collaboration, including within its own operations.
ByteDance, the Company Behind TikTok
ByteDance is the Chinese technology company best known internationally for TikTok, its short-form video platform. The company also operates other digital products, including CapCut and Lark, serving different audiences and business needs.
While TikTok focuses on video creation and social media, Lark targets businesses and organizations seeking integrated workplace tools. ByteDance describes Lark as a platform that combines chat, meetings, calendars, documents, and email to support team collaboration.
The potential adoption of Lark in Pakistan would therefore involve a different part of ByteDance’s business from the social media services most users associate with the company.
Pakistan’s Lark Adoption Plans
The discussions are reportedly at an advanced stage, although the final arrangements and scope of the proposed adoption have not been publicly detailed. It remains unclear which government departments or institutions would use the platform first.
Details about the rollout timeline, implementation arrangements, and the scale of deployment are also awaited. An official announcement could clarify how Pakistan plans to use Lark and whether the platform will be introduced across government departments or through a more limited rollout.
