Fresh death claims: Unverified reports alleging Kim Jong-un died from a brain hemorrhage spread across international media after originating from a US-based Chinese dissident’s social media posts.
Seoul rejects rumors: South Korean diplomatic and security officials said they had no intelligence supporting the claims, dismissing them as unsubstantiated.
Pyongyang's visual rebuttal: North Korean state media released photographs of Kim visiting a product exhibition with his wife and daughter, contradicting claims that he was comatose or dead.
History of false alarms: Similar rumors surfaced in 1986, 2008, 2014, 2020 and 2025. In 2020, two South Korean lawmakers publicly suggested Kim was dead or incapacitated before he reappeared.
Health risks persist: South Korea's spy agency assessed on Sept. 30 that Kim, despite weighing over 140 kilograms and facing elevated cardiovascular disease risks, showed no signs of serious illness and remained physically active.
Secrecy fuels speculation: Pyongyang's tight control over information about its leadership creates an intelligence vacuum, allowing unverified claims about Kim's health and succession to gain traction.
Delayed death disclosures: North Korea concealed the deaths of Kim Il-sung in 1994 and Kim Jong-il in 2011 for more than a day, reinforcing uncertainty over when and how leadership changes might become public.
