Who Dominates Kenya, Elites and Regions Explained

GUIDES · KENYA

Kenya power rests with a president, a few political families and shifting alliances between regions and ethnic communities. Business owners, churches and trade unions add weight of their own.

For US readers, this structure decides how stable a key American security partner in East Africa stays before the August 2027 election.

This guide explains who dominates Kenya as of October 2026, how they hold on to power and who is left out. It complements our guide to the formal institutions, Kenya Politics Explained, Who Holds Power in 2026.

How Power Works at the Top

Kenya’s 2010 constitution concentrates executive power in an elected president. William Ruto of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), his own party, has held the office since September 2022.

He is eligible for a second and final term.

His deputy is Kithure Kindiki, appointed after the Senate impeached Rigathi Gachagua in October 2024. He was sworn in on 1 November 2024, Capital FM reports.

Senators upheld five of eleven charges against Gachagua on 17 October 2024, Citizen Digital reported. One upheld charge concerned offences under the National Cohesion and Integration Act, the law against ethnic hate speech and discrimination.

The constitution fixes elections on the second Tuesday in August every fifth year. That puts the next general election on Tuesday 10 August 2027.

Winning it requires a coalition that reaches well beyond any single region.

The Political Families

Three families have shaped Kenyan politics for decades. The Kenyatta and Moi families held the presidency from 1964 to 2002.

The Odinga family still leads one of the two largest parties.

Jomo Kenyatta was the first president, from 1964 to 1978, according to the Uhuru Kenyatta Presidential Library. Daniel arap Moi followed from 1978 to 2002, and Mwai Kibaki served from 2002 to 2013.

Uhuru Kenyatta, Jomo’s son, was president from 2013 to 2022.

The Kenyatta family also holds business weight. Muhoho Kenyatta, part of the founding president’s family, is the top individual shareholder in NCBA Group, with 227.3 million shares, Business Daily reported in May 2026.

It called his holding the largest disclosed personal fortune on the Nairobi Securities Exchange.

The Moi family keeps a political vehicle. Gideon Moi, son of the former president, chairs the Kenya African National Union (KANU).

Citizen Digital reported in May 2026 on an ongoing engagement between him and Ruto, without a signed pact.

Raila Odinga, a former prime minister, died in India on 15 October 2025, aged 80, The Star reported. His elder brother Oburu Oginga, senator for Siaya County, now leads the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), the party says.

Regions and Ethnic Communities in Power

The 2019 census counted 8,148,668 Kikuyu, 6,823,842 Luhya and 6,358,113 Kalenjin, according to the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS). Next came 5,066,966 Luo and 4,663,910 Kamba.

Kenya has “some 40-odd ethnic groups” and no single dominant community, writes Westen Shilaho of the University of Johannesburg. Of its five presidents, three have been Kikuyu and two Kalenjin.

In his analysis, voting is often “akin to an ethnic census”, and winning candidates have had to build alliances with other ethnic groups.

Shilaho also argues that the president’s co-ethnics have held state posts disproportionately since independence. The 2010 constitution responds by requiring state appointments to reflect Kenya’s diversity.

How well that rule is respected remains a matter of public debate.

The populous Mount Kenya region is a key battleground for 2027. Deputy President Kindiki has stepped up his activity there, and Njuri Ncheke elders from Mount Kenya East present him as a regional voice, Capital FM reports.

Gachagua, now a leading critic of the government, is building a rival alliance.

In the west, ODM backs what Ruto calls a broad-based government after years in opposition. The party lists Gladys Wanga as national chairperson.

Abdulswamad Nassir and Simba Arati are its deputy party leaders, with a third post vacant.

The Military and Security Forces

The military is the least visible pillar of power in Kenya. The Ministry of Defence lists General Charles Kahariri as Chief of the Defence Forces as of October 2026.

Security services became a political issue during the 2024 tax protests. On 25 June 2024, demonstrators breached the premises of Parliament for the first time in Kenya’s history, The EastAfrican reported.

Ruto declined to sign the Finance Bill 2024 the next day.

The intelligence service also featured in the Gachagua impeachment. Senators upheld a charge of gross misconduct over his attacks on the National Intelligence Service.

The case showed how far security institutions sit inside the president’s sphere of power.

Business and Banking Power

Political families and private wealth often overlap in Kenya. Bank ownership is one of the clearest windows on that overlap.

NCBA Group, where Muhoho Kenyatta is the top individual shareholder, is changing hands. The Central Bank of Kenya approved on 28 August 2026 the acquisition of up to 66% of NCBA by South Africa’s Nedbank Group.

The central bank said the deal would enhance the resilience of the banking sector.

NCBA itself was formed in 2019 from a merger of NIC Group and Commercial Bank of Africa, the central bank says. It owns banks in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda.

Churches, Mosques and Unions

Religion is a source of moral authority that politicians court. In the 2019 census, 85.5% of Kenyans were Christian and about 11% Muslim, the KNBS reports.

Protestants made up 33.4%, Catholics 20.6% and evangelical churches 20.4%.

The constitution says there is no state religion. Church leaders still test the government in public.

In November 2024, Nairobi’s Catholic Archbishop Philip Anyolo returned donations made by Ruto and Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja at a Soweto parish, People Daily reported.

Organised labour has its own long-serving power broker. Francis Atwoli was re-elected unopposed as secretary-general of the Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU) in Kisumu in March 2026, The Star reported.

It was his sixth re-election, and the federation says it represents more than four million workers.

Inequality and Who Is Left Out

Kenya’s Gini index, a standard measure of income inequality, was 38.5 in 2022, per the World Bank. That was down from 40.8 in 2015.

In 2022 the richest tenth of the population received 30.9% of income, against 2.9% for the poorest tenth.

Poverty remains wide. In 2022, 39.8% of Kenyans lived below the national poverty line, and 45.5% lived on under US$3 a day at 2021 purchasing-power prices, the World Bank says.

About 32% of people lived in towns and cities in 2025.

Young people are the largest group outside the circle of power. About 36% of residents were under 15 in 2025, according to the World Bank.

The 2024 protests against the Finance Bill showed how fast that frustration can reach Parliament.

Women remain under-represented in elected office. The constitution says no more than two-thirds of any elective or appointive body may be of the same gender.

That rule “remains largely unfulfilled 15 years after the Constitution”, The Standard noted in August 2026.

What It Means for US Readers

For investors, Kenya’s power structure means that political risk peaks around elections and tax decisions. Bank deals such as Nedbank’s purchase of NCBA show that foreign capital still enters through established local holders.

Watch coalition shifts in the Mount Kenya region and the west through 2027.

For travellers and expats, the main political risk falls around elections and protest days. Large demonstrations in 2024 showed that unrest can start quickly in Nairobi.

For policy readers, Kenya has been a designated major non-NATO ally since 2024. A contested 2027 result would matter for US security planning across East Africa.

What Is Not Known

• Whether Ruto will keep Kithure Kindiki as his running mate for 2027; Kindiki has not said Ruto has settled on him.
• Whether the opposition will agree on a single presidential candidate, and which regions it can unite behind one ticket.
• Whether Gideon Moi’s KANU will formally back Ruto, beyond the engagement reported so far.
• When the Nedbank purchase of NCBA will be completed, and what role the Kenyatta family will keep in the bank.
• Whether Parliament will pass a law to meet the two-thirds gender rule before the 2027 election.
• Updated census figures: the next full count after 2019 has not been published.
