Juba County authorities have arrested eight suspects accused of repackaging expired maize flour for resale at a company in Gumbo, on the outskirts of Juba.
According to a statement issued by the Office of the Caretaker Commissioner on October 24, the suspects were arrested on Saturday afternoon at H Brothers General Trading and Investment Company Limited.
The statement said security personnel found the suspects transferring expired maize flour into new sacks for resale, raising concerns about food safety and consumer protection.
The company, which operates a grinding mill factory, was subsequently closed, while the eight suspects were taken into custody pending further legal proceedings.
Juba County Caretaker Commissioner Moulana Kalisto Lado warned traders against selling expired food products, saying the county administration would take action against businesses violating public health and consumer safety regulations.
“Public health and consumer safety remain a priority for the county administration,” the statement said.
Lado pledged to ensure that those found responsible for trading in expired goods are held accountable in accordance with the law.
The county authorities have urged traders to comply with public health and safety regulations, warning that violations will not be tolerated.
The incident has raised concerns over the handling and sale of food products in the market, particularly the potential risks associated with consuming expired goods.
