The Kogi State Police Command has launched an investigation into the deaths of two police officers in Ajaokuta Local Government Area amid reports of a suspected murder-suicide.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, Afusat Saliu, confirmed the development in an interview with Sunday Punch on Saturday, saying the circumstances surrounding the incident were still being investigated.
An earlier report by SaharaReporters alleged that a police corporal identified as Amos shot his alleged girlfriend, Grace, who was also a corporal, before turning the gun on himself.
According to a source cited in the report, Amos was assigned to night duty as a station guard at about 6 pm on Friday but allegedly left his post a few hours later.
He was said to have gone to Grace’s quarters at about 9 pm, where he allegedly fired three shots at her, hitting her shoulder, lower abdomen and leg, before shooting himself with his AK-47 rifle.
The reported incident was linked to an alleged breakdown in the relationship between the two officers, who were said to have been dating for several years.
The source claimed that tensions had increased in recent months over allegations of infidelity and a lack of trust, with their disagreements reportedly escalating into physical confrontations and threats.
According to the source, the Divisional Crime Officer (DCO) had intervened at some point, detaining the officers and advising them to end the relationship to prevent further conflict.
However, the intervention reportedly failed to resolve the dispute.
Speaking on the incident, Saliu said the command was aware of the case and would provide further information after the investigation had been concluded.
“We are aware of the incident, and the case is currently under investigation; we will update members of the public after the investigation is concluded,” she said.

The police spokesperson also declined to confirm whether the deceased were serving officers under the Kogi State Police Command, saying she could not establish that information at the time.
Saliu further cautioned against drawing conclusions about the nature of the deaths, noting that the command had yet to determine whether the incident was a case of suicide.
She said the police would issue an official statement after receiving a conclusive report on the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
