The Los Angeles Chargers are scuffling. They have lost all six games they have played this season and are essentially eliminated from playoff contention. Star quarterback Justin Herbert hasn’t been able to lead the team as well as he would have hoped.
Many have blamed Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh for the failed season, and it is safe to say that he is on the hot seat. However, NFL insider Ari Meirov believes that Herbert also deserves a lot of blame, especially when he is one of the league’s highest-earning quarterbacks.
“The Chargers are paying Justin Herbert $55M per year… It’s okay to say he deserves blame for an 0–6 start instead of making endless excuses,” Meirov captioned his post on X on Thursday.
While Herbert’s annual salary accounts for around $52.5 million, Meirov’s point still remains that he needs to share the responsibility for a disappointing season.
Ari Meirov comments on Justin Herbert and the Chargers’ offensive woes
Ari Meirov sounded off on the excuses around Herbert and shared how their offensive woes have come from Herbert, the players, the head coach as well as the offensive coordinator, Mike McDaniel.
“I’ve seen some of the excuses. Justin needs help. Justin needs this. I mean, at some point, they’ve given as much as they possibly could to this offense,” Meirov said. (Timestamp: 24:42)
“They have a first-round running back in Omarion Hampton, first-round left tackle in Rashawn Slater, first-round right tackle in Joe Alt, first-round wide receiver in Quentin Johnston. Like, they have invested in this offense. They got him the hottest offensive coordinator on the market this past year in Mike McDaniel. Obviously, it has not worked, but the idea of just keeping on to give all these excuses for Justin Herbert is kind of outrageous to me. At some point, some of the blame falls on Justin Herbert as well.”
The insider also said that he thinks that Harbaugh must make some tough decisions to rectify the situation. He believes that they might not fire McDaniel in the middle of the season, but a huge change is inevitable.
