By Zoila Palma: El Salvador’s Ambassador to Belize, Graciela Perez, met with Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and New Growth Industries Rodwell Ferguson and Minister of State Luis Alex Balona on October 13 to promote the propagation of El Salvador’s national tree, “Tabebuia rosea”, known in El Salvador as Maquilishuat.
The visit formed part of a diplomatic initiative aimed at promoting environmental sustainability, agricultural exchange and stronger cultural ties between Belize and El Salvador.
During the meeting, Ambassador Perez shared informational packets and a small glass jar containing fresh Maquilishuat seeds as a gesture of goodwill and ecological partnership.
The Maquilishuat tree can provide shade in open areas and may also be incorporated into silvopastoral reforestation initiatives, which combine trees with livestock and pasture management. The tree is known for its beautiful pink flowers, which typically bloom once a year during the dry season, primarily between January and May.
