Tirunelveli district administration organised a mock drill on banks of Tamirabarani river on Saturday to demonstrate precautionary measures to be taken during the Northeast monsoon season.
The mock drill was conducted with the participation of several departments including Revenue, Police, Fire and Rescue, National Disaster Response Force and Health. Various drills were held to educate people on the procedures to be followed by the public during disasters, such as how to protect affected people and how to protect their livestock.
Addressing the media, Tirunelveli District Collector Anand Mohan said the public was given a detailed briefing on how the control rooms of disaster management, Fire and Rescue Service and Health departments work together during natural disasters.
He added that, according to the Indian Meteorological Department Tirunelveli district is likely to receive average or above normal rainfall during the current monsoon season.
To prevent rainwater from accumulating, the Corporation and Water Resource Departments are carrying out dredging work on major waterways and canals and efforts have been intensified to remove blockages in canals to ensure unhindered drainage of water, Mr. Mohan said.
He added that to ensure that pregnant motors receive appropriate medical assistance during disasters, the health department has provided a list of pregnant women expected to deliver within the next three months. They are being monitored through the control room at the district collectorate.
He said that the district administration and all related departments are continuously taking precautionary measures to avoid the potential impacts of northeast monsoon.
