"Monday Night Football" is serving up an NFC showdown between two teams riding wildly different emotional roller coasters.
The San Francisco 49ers are flying high after a statement win, while the Washington Commanders are still trying to make sense of an overtime tie that felt more like a loss.
San Francisco is back home looking to keep its undefeated season rolling and prove it belongs among the NFC’s elite.
The 49ers enter Week 6 undefeated, with Brock Purdy playing like a legitimate MVP candidate. He's at the top with Josh Allen in the MVP conversation heading into Week 6, and after leading San Francisco to a massive road win over the defending champion Seattle Seahawks, Purdy and company have officially entered the conversation as the NFC's team to beat. Not bad for a squad that's already been battered by injuries this season.
Kyle Shanahan's offense continues to hum despite the revolving door in the lineup. Deebo Samuel's hamstring injury means no revenge game against his former team, but with Mike Evans, George Kittle and Christian McCaffrey bringing plenty of firepower, the Niners aren't exactly short on playmakers. The question is whether Washington can slow down an offense that seems capable of scoring on just about anyone.
The Commanders, meanwhile, are trying to wash away the taste of an embarrassing overtime tie against the New York Giants. Jayden Daniels admitted to a costly mental error that let the clock run out in a moment that left Washington fans questioning reality. Head coach Dan Quinn also accepted some responsibility, and the Commanders will be desperate to prove that bizarre finish won't derail their season.
Daniels is playing just his second game since returning from a dislocated elbow, making his health a storyline worth monitoring as the season unfolds.
There's also a little history on the sidelines. Shanahan and Quinn know each other well from their time together in Atlanta, when they were part of the coaching staff that infamously watched a 28-3 Super Bowl lead evaporate against Tom Brady. Surely, neither man needs a reminder of how quickly things can go sideways.
Can the undefeated Niners keep rolling, or will Washington pull off a Monday night surprise?
