One of the men wore an orange cap branded with the Kenyan coat of arms. Over the footage, she wrote:
"Ahhh so lovely seeing all the ODM officials celebrating Baba's first memorial. While they were in Dubai we received their gifts from Afgoonistan! Asante. We most reciprocate."
The post went viral almost immediately, with many reading it as a thinly veiled rebuke of party officials who chose comfort abroad over solidarity in Bondo.
Who skipped the Bondo memorial?
The commemoration, held at Migwena Grounds in Bondo, Siaya County on Wednesday, October 15, marked exactly one year since Raila Amolo Odinga passed away in India following a cardiac arrest on October 15, 2025.
Among those who did not attend were ODM National Chairperson and Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, who confirmed she was in Dubai for the RISE Summit 2026. Also missing were Minority Leader Junet Mohamed, Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir, Mining CS Hassan Joho, Treasury CS John Mbadi, Cooperatives CS Wycliffe Oparanya, and even Raila's own brother, ODM party leader Oburu Oginga.
Junet Mohamed later offered a public explanation, saying he stayed away because the invitation list included former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, whom he accused of having tormented Raila.
An anonymous ODM MP cited by The Eastleigh Voice claimed that Wanga and other officials were neither officially invited nor involved in organising the event, pointing to personal tensions between Mama Ida Odinga, Winnie, and Wanga as the root cause.
A party divided, a family hurting
Those who did show up in Bondo painted a contrasting picture of ODM's fault lines. Siaya governor James Orengo, Senator Edwin Sifuna, Babu Owino, Kalonzo Musyoka, Martha Karua, and ODM Deputy Party Leader Simba Arati were present, alongside Energy CS Opiyo Wandayi.
The ceremony was also marred by chaotic scenes when youths forced their way into the VIP section and stones were hurled toward the VIP tent, with security personnel using plastic chairs to shield leaders. Five people were arrested. Winnie's reference to "gifts from Afgoonistan" appeared to be a sardonic nod to that violence.
Mama Ida Odinga sought to calm the storm, saying in a statement:
"An invitation to a family commemoration is an expression of fellowship, not a summons. Neither attendance nor absence should be interpreted as a disagreement with our family."
Winnie's closing line, "We most reciprocate," landed differently. For many who attended Bondo and mourned in the dust while party bigwigs were photographed on a jet, it read less like a typo and more like a promise.
