Bitcoin’s ownership map is being redrawn in real time. A CryptoQuant report published October 16, 2026, authored by analyst MorenoDV_, found that new whales now hold $78.61 billion in realized cap, representing 33.06% of the total whale realized cap. That compares to $159.15 billion held by old whales at the same point in time.
What the numbers actually mean
The realized cap is not a price metric. Think of it like a weighted average cost basis across all coins, where each Bitcoin is valued at the price it last moved on-chain, not today’s spot price. It gives a cleaner picture of where capital actually entered the market, rather than what a position is worth at any given moment.
For this analysis, CryptoQuant defines new whales as addresses holding more than 1,000 BTC with an unspent transaction output age of less than 155 days. Old whales hold the same minimum balance but have UTXOs older than that threshold.
The share held by new whales was approximately 18% earlier in 2026. By October 15, that figure had climbed to 33.06%. MorenoDV_ notes that the increase has been driven by a continuous rise in new whale realized cap since September, while old whale realized cap has remained relatively stable over the same period.
Cost basis recovery and what it signals
The aggregate cost basis for new whales dropped to approximately $68,000 in late August, likely reflecting a period of accumulation during a price dip. That figure has since recovered to around $77,000, which aligns with where Bitcoin was trading during the accumulation surge.
As of October 16, Bitcoin was trading at approximately $82,134, roughly 6.7% above the new whale cohort’s recovered cost basis.
Institutional flows and the January precedent
The report connects this shift to a broader trend of institutional and ETF-driven inflows that accelerated through early 2026. A similar pattern in new whale activity was noted in January 2026, suggesting this is not a one-off event but part of a recurring cycle tied to how fresh capital enters the Bitcoin ecosystem.
