AUBURN — An improbable upset of the top-ranked team in the land may well have been a fluke from Auburn football, and it certainly didn't result in a string of considerable victories as the Tigers looked listless in a 38-17 loss to No. 17 LSU on Saturday, Oct. 24, at Jordan-Hare Stadium.
One week removed from upsetting then-No. 1 Georgia, Auburn (4-3, 2-3 SEC) sputtered from the onset against LSU (6-2, 3-2) in all-too-familiar ways. Its defense struggled to stop Lane Kiffin's offense, and LSU's stout defense had its way with an inconsistent Auburn offense.
FULL RECAP: Auburn football suffers blowout loss against LSU
Take a look at our report card below for grades on Auburn's performance, with marks for coaching and every side of the ball.
Auburn football offense grade: D-
The best thing about Auburn's offense was an efficient day from Byrum Brown. He was still sacked seven times, and the entire offense struggled to surpass 200 total yards.
Auburn football defense grade: F
Another dismal performance from DJ Durkin's unit, which did not arrive as it did against Florida or Tennessee. The ground game was a moot point, because LSU quarterback Sam Leavitt carved up Auburn's secondary.
Auburn football special teams grade: C+
A kickoff penalty was the biggest blemish in an otherwise average performance. Punter Hudson Kaak had some impactful boots, but the unit only made so much of a difference.
Auburn football coaches grade: F
Within four quarters, the coaching was certainly a failure. Factor into it how much momentum Auburn had following its previous contest, and the failure only grows.
Auburn football final grade vs LSU: F
The circumstance and the game itself made for a disheartening result against LSU, and Auburn will have plenty to shake off heading into another ranked road trip next weekend.
