Manchester City forward Phil Foden has expressed his relief after ending his goal drought in Saturday’s 3-2 Premier League victory over newly promoted Ipswich Town.
The England international scored his first league goal for the club since December, helping City maintain their perfect start to the season with a hard-fought win.
Foden, who has struggled for form in recent months, admitted that his failure to convert several opportunities had weighed heavily on him.
Speaking to BBC Match of the Day after the game, Foden said: “Definitely due one, missed quite a few big chances this season.
“It’s been eating me alive so good to score today but most important thing is to get three points and be in a good position in the league. Massive win.”
The forward also praised head coach Enzo Maresca, saying the players had responded positively to his ideas while acknowledging that the team still had areas to improve.
Foden said: “He (Maresca) has settled in really well; the lads are buying into what he wants to do.
“There are a lot of things to improve still, and today is a good example of that; we can do a lot better. Hopefully we can keep improving and keep getting strong.”
Despite securing all three points, Foden acknowledged that Ipswich had made life difficult for City with their aggressive approach and ability to retain possession.

He said: “We have to give Ipswich a lot of respect; they played a brilliant game.
“Good on the ball, aggressive and made it difficult. It’s not always going to be pretty; it’s just about getting the result, and we did that today, so I’m really happy.”
The forward also praised the home supporters for their backing, saying their encouragement gave the team an additional lift during the contest.
“You can tell they are behind us and they’re pushing us. Nice to play at home; you can hear how loud they are, and they’re giving us that extra boost that we need,” he said.
