The Ohio State Buckeyes held on for a 19-15 win over the Indiana Hoosiers on Saturday, but they lost star quarterback Julian Sayin to an arm injury in the process. Now, head coach Ryan Day has provided an update on Sayin’s status, and it isn’t good news for Buckeyes fans.
Speaking on Tuesday, Day said that Sayin is out “indefinitely” with an injury to his throwing arm and is “doubtful” to return for the regular season. The Buckeyes are now preparing for the possibility that last season’s Heisman Trophy finalist won’t return at all this season.
Sayin Injured Against Indiana
Sayin threw a 38-yard touchdown pass to Jeremiah Smith on fourth-and-1 early in the fourth quarter on Saturday. But a few minutes later, he was sacked and injured.
Sayin then headed to the locker room favoring his right arm and later returned to the sideline wearing a sling.
Following the game, Day didn’t have many specifics, but he made it clear that Ohio State would be without its quarterback for quite a while.
“I don’t have a ton of details, but he’ll probably be out several weeks,” Day told reporters after the game, via On3. “We’ll have to come up with a plan there.”
‘He is out indefinitely’
On Tuesday, Day revealed that the situation is even worse than first expected.
“We’re not gonna put any timeline for his injury, but he is out indefinitely,” Day said, via Dan Hope of Eleven Warriors.
Day added that Ohio State is putting together a plan for Sayin potentially missing the rest of the regular season and the postseason.
“What we’re trying to do is give Julian’s family space and privacy to go through this process, but based on the nature of the injury, we’re putting together a plan for him not being available for the regular season, and also him not being available for the postseason,” Day said, via NBC4. “Based on that, if he’s not able to return this fall, we’re putting a plan together for that as well.”
Day also said that it is “doubtful” Sayin will play again during the regular season, according to Hope.
With Sayin out, the Buckeyes will likely turn to true freshman Luke Fahey, who filled in for Sayin for the remainder of the game against Indiana. But Day said that sophomore Tavien St. Clair will also see reps during practice as the team develops a plan going forward.
