Real Mallorca 3 - 1 Las Palmas
What a difference a week can make! After the frustrations of last Sunday’s goalless draw away at Girona, 16,229 Mallorquinistas in the Son Moix had every reason to hope for a much improved performance this Sunday against a depleted (through injury and suspension) Las Palmas. They were short of nine regular first team members.
Midfielder Pablo Torre played a particular role in the middle of the park and everything went through him. It was no surprise when his thunderbolt deflected shot put Mallorca ahead in the 27th minute. After all the recent concerns about our lack of attacking inspiration, Sunday night’s win was just the response we had been waiting for.
Mallorca steamrolled a poor Las Palmas side and at long last we played with two wingers, Cerdá and Liso. Their input helped the team to play some of the best football we’ve seem so far this season. The transformation in attack was radical and was just the response the fans wanted. There was greater energy about our play, better movement on and off the ball, and most encouragingly a willingness to take the game to our opponents rather than simply passing sideways and backwards.
Alex Sala had the ball in the net near half time but after all the celebrations from fans and players alike, VAR intervened and his effort was ruled marginally offside. Fate, however, ultimately did him justice in the 52nd minute. Receiving the ball at the edge of the penalty area following a throw-in, he unleashed a “worldy” that gave the Las Palmas keeper no chance. The 2-0 scoreline reflected the match which was dominated from star to finish by the home side. However, briefly, Las Palmas came to life. Mallorca defence went momentarily sloppy and Ivan’s powerful strike gave Mallorca keeper Arnau Tenas no chance, 2-1, game on.
However, the nervous finish to the game was short-lived. Substitute Sergi Darder set up Adri Fuentes and “The Buffalo” restored our two-goal cushion. The relief around the ground was palpable and the final stages could be enjoyed with considerably less anxiety than we have sometimes experienced this season. Consistency remains the key, particularly with a demanding campaign ahead, and performances like this remind local fans why we support Real Mallorca, through disappointments as well as the good times.
After the win, Mallorca are fourth in the table, four points behind leaders Eibar who we face away next Saturday (17th) at 4:30. Eibar play Oviedo on Monday night.
