ISLAMABAD: The main accused in the case involving International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI) gold medallist Laiba Ijaz’s death died after gunmen opened fire on a police team transporting him for recovery in Islamabad, police said.
According to police, Muhammad Noman was in custody and was being taken for recovery on the basis of his identification within the limits of Ramna police station when four men riding two motorcycles opened fire in an apparent attempt to free him.
Noman sustained injuries in the firing and later died. The police team remained safe due to bulletproof jackets and precautionary measures, while a search operation was launched to arrest the attackers and their accomplices.
Noman was the main accused in the case involving Laiba Ijaz, who died by suicide after allegedly being defrauded of Rs9 million on the promise of being sent to the United States for education.
Meanwhile, investigators have also uncovered details of a separate fraud case registered against Noman in Mansehra.
According to the sources, Noman and his alleged accomplices were accused of defrauding a family of Rs8.5 million by promising government jobs for six children. The suspects allegedly provided the family with fake appointment letters, which were later found to be forged when verified.
The affected family subsequently registered a fraud case against Noman and his alleged accomplices. Following the registration of the case, Noman reportedly went into hiding, and a court declared him a proclaimed offender, the sources said.
The search for the men who attacked the police team is ongoing.
