Solana’s Alpenglow upgrade goes live October 21st, targeting ~150ms finality.
Solana’s most ambitious consensus overhaul, Alpenglow, will activate at epoch 1064 on Oct. 21st, around 15:00 UTC, per the Solana Foundation. It swaps out TowerBFT, the voting system Solana has run since genesis, and targets roughly 150 millisecond finality, down from about 12.8 seconds today.
What’s the Scoop?
Votor first, Rotor later: Next week’s switch ships only Votor, Alpenglow’s new voting engine. Under Votor, validators trade signed votes directly and roll them into compact certificates. Rotor, the block-propagation half of the design, needs its own governance proposal and doesn’t have a date yet.
Finality simplified: Solana’s “confirmed” and “finalized” states effectively merge, so bridges and exchanges no longer have to pick between speed and certainty. In return, Alpenglow drops the classic 1/3rd fault-tolerance bar for a “20+20” model: the network stays safe with up to 20% of stake acting maliciously and keeps running with another 20% offline.

Client shakeup: Neither Firedancer client will support the migration window itself, so those operators must temporarily run Agave. The hybrid Frankendancer client is also being retired for good. Firedancer-family clients have secured roughly 14% to 26% of staked SOL this year, depending on the tally.
Vote fees out, burn in: Per-vote fees of about 1 SOL per epoch give way to a flat 0.8 SOL admission ticket, and the ticket is burned in full. Because votes leave blocks, Solana’s raw TPS will plunge on day one. Non-vote TPS is the number to watch for apples-to-apples comparisons.
The big picture: Alpenglow was first unveiled at Solana Accelerate in May 2025 and was once expected as early as Q1 2026. That slow rollout is the right call for swapping consensus on a live network. The bigger shift is philosophical: Proof of History, Solana’s calling card at launch, stops keeping time for consensus next week.
