A 30 year old Scottish tourist is being treated in hospital on the Greek island of Rhodes after suffering serious injuries in a fall from a hotel balcony, with her family launching a fundraising appeal to cover the cost of medically assisted transport back to Scotland.
Denby McLaren, from Larkhall in Lanarkshire, was holidaying in Rhodes with her mother to celebrate her birthday when the accident occurred, according to Greek media reports.
The 30 year old reportedly fell from a third floor hotel balcony, sustaining multiple injuries, including a fractured vertebra and several fractures to her leg.
She remains hospitalised in Rhodes, where doctors are treating her injuries. Her family is now trying to arrange a specialist medical flight so she can continue her recovery closer to home.
Family faces £12,000 medical transport bill
According to her relatives, doctors have advised that McLaren will need to travel on a stretcher with continuous medical support during the journey to Scotland.
The cost of the specialist transport has placed a significant financial burden on the family, prompting them to establish a fundraising campaign through GoFundMe.
The appeal aims to raise £12,000 to cover the cost of bringing her home safely.
The campaign had reportedly raised more than £11,000 by the time of publication, with donations continuing to come in.
‘We just want to bring Denby home’
In their fundraising appeal, McLaren’s family described the shock of the accident and the uncertainty surrounding her recovery.
They said she had suffered serious injuries after falling from the hotel’s third floor, including a fractured vertebra and multiple fractures to her leg.
The family said she had already spent four days in hospital in Greece, separated from the people who would normally be supporting her through such a difficult period.
“It is impossible to describe in words the fear, sadness and uncertainty we are experiencing at this moment,” the family wrote.
“In a matter of moments, everything changed and we found ourselves faced with a situation for which none of us could have been prepared.”
They added that their priority was to bring her back to Scotland so she could continue treatment surrounded by family and friends.
“Our greatest wish is simple: we just want to bring Denby home,” they said.
Messages of support pour in
The fundraising appeal has attracted donations and messages of encouragement from people hoping to help McLaren return to Scotland.
Supporters have shared messages of strength for the injured woman and her family as they navigate the emotional and financial challenges following the accident.
Her relatives thanked everyone who has contributed to the appeal, saying every donation and message of support has made a difference during an extremely difficult time.
The immediate goal is to secure the funds needed for the specialist medical transfer, allowing McLaren to continue her treatment closer to home.
