Johannesburg is putting on its most spectacular seasonal display. The City of Joburg shared photos of the city's famous jacaranda trees in full bloom on 13 October 2026, and the images stopped people mid-scroll.
Purple petals line the avenues of Joburg's leafy suburbs, sunset skies glow above flowering canopies, and soft blooms carpet the streets below. Whether residents are out for an early morning run or simply driving through the neighbourhood, the city's urban forest is impossible to ignore this time of year.

Joburg's purple streets spark nostalgia
The jacaranda is one of South Africa's most recognisable signs that spring has arrived, and for many, the sight of those purple blooms carries deeply personal memories.
For students, however, the trees carry a more mixed meaning. The jacaranda's bloom has long been associated with exam season at South African universities, and that connection was not lost on commenters.
Joburg residents share their jacaranda moments
South Africans had plenty to say in the comments on the City of Joburg's Facebook page:
Cuddy Dothings wrote:
"The Jacaranda season used to stress me as a student 😭 cause they reminded me that exam season is approaching 😂 to all students good luck with your exams ❤✌🏽"
Lizette Bezuidenhout shared:
"I live in Alberton and have 3 of these trees in my yard. I have to park under them so my car is always sticky this time of year and when it's in full bloom I have a purple car every morning🤣. It's messy but very beautiful."
Cecil John Rhodes Guest House Kimberley commented:
"🌸💜 Johannesburg certainly knows how to put on a spectacular spring show! Those jacarandas are breathtaking."
Marlene Boshoff added:
"Jacaranda are most beautiful in Tshwane."
SHarmane Sookayi said:
"Reminds me of my primary school days. When all the flowers were on the school grounds."
Joburg is simply stunning in lilac and gold, and residents are soaking up every last petal before the season moves on.
