Tears and prayers marked a solemn Requiem Mass held in Ecuador for a Catholic priest who died after a crucifix fell on him while he was celebrating Mass in a service that was being livestreamed.

The Archdiocese of Guayaquil held the Eucharistic celebration in honour of Redemptorist priest Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari, CSsR, who died on the evening of Saturday, October 17.

Father Patricio was celebrating Mass when the crucifix fell on him, bringing the religious service to a tragic end.

Cardinal Luis Cabrera leads Requiem Mass

The incident was captured on a livestream, and footage subsequently circulated widely on social media.

His death prompted an outpouring of grief, with the Catholic Church in Guayaquil gathering to honour his life and pray for the repose of his soul.

Cardinal Luis Cabrera, OFM, the Archbishop of Guayaquil, presided over the Requiem Mass, joined by auxiliary bishops, priests, members of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer and the faithful.

The gathering provided an opportunity for members of the Catholic community to come together in prayer and remember the priest whose death had shocked worshippers.

Archdiocese thanks mourners around the world

As the Church mourned his passing, the celebration also served as a moment of spiritual reflection and remembrance for those who knew him and those touched by his ministry.

The Archdiocese of Guayaquil expressed gratitude for the condolences and messages of solidarity it had received from people around the world following Father Patricio's death.

The church also appealed to the faithful to continue praying for the eternal repose of his soul.

The appeal came as messages of sympathy continued to accompany the mourning of the Redemptorist priest, whose death occurred during a religious service.
