…Five people killed, property worth millions of Naira destroyed in latest crisis
By Vincent Ujumadu
On October I, 2026, when Nigerians were celebrating the country’s 66th Independence anniversary, two neighbouring communities of Aguleri and Umuoba Anam, both in Anambra East Local Government Area of Anambra State, were busy fighting each other over the alleged right position of the boundary between them. At the last count, five people lost their lives.
Part of the massive palace of the traditional ruler of Aguleri was set ablaze, while goods, mainly rice and large tubers of yam (the area is the food basket of Anambra State), were destroyed. People fled their homes, while youths of both communities fought with firearms.
Several houses and shops were destroyed, set ablaze, and in a viral video, voices were heard ordering armed men to shoot at sight. Many residents of the area fled, and the ever-busy Otuocha-Umuoba Anam road has been deserted.
Rice mills and hundreds of bags of rice were destroyed, and smoke was seen coming out of many residential houses, while traders were seen salvaging some of their property.
Apart from the palace of Igwe Idigo, some of the other houses destroyed were those of Chief Nonso Ozemene, Chief Nnaluo Ebunu, Chief Okonkwo Umebe, and other buildings within the Aguleri-Umuoba Anam boundary, as well as shops at the Timber market in Aguleri.
The cause of the clash was said to be the alleged decision of Aguleri Community to mount a signpost and Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras on the boundary between the two communities, which Umuoba Anam community resisted.
There were other reports that what ignited the latest battle was that the place the signpost was mounted was not the appropriate boundary between the two communities. Angered by the development, Umuoba Anam youths pulled it down, insisting that the signpost was mounted on their land. Later, dangerous weapons were freely used, leading to casualties, with five people confirmed dead and several others injured.
It was gathered from the area that originally, Aguleri owned part of the area presently known as Umuoba Anam, but gave it to the Anam people in perpetuity. “One thing we should understand is that Umuoba Anam have continued to live peacefully in the portion of land bought from Aguleri ancestors in the olden days, which the new generation of Aguleri youths are insisting on taking over”, a resident of the area claimed.
Recall that during a similar incident which lasted from 1999 to 2002 in the same local government area between Aguleri and Umuleri, over 300 lives were lost. The scars of that three-year war are still seen as one enters the local government.
It was apparently to avoid another prolonged war that informed the quick intervention of the Anambra State Government, with Governor Chukwuma Soludo detailing his deputy, Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim, who is the chairman of the state boundary commission, and the state Commissioner of Police, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, to the area to quell the hostilities without delay.
During the visit, Ibezim ordered a stoppage of further activity in Otuocha market until the state government completes necessary investigations and takes appropriate action against those responsible for the incident.
He warned that no community leader or local government chairman has the authority to determine boundaries between communities without the knowledge of the state government, stressing that the State Boundary Commission is responsible for determining boundaries within the state.
In the meantime, Professor Chukwuma Soludo has set up a Commission of Inquiry to look into the matter. The Judicial Commission of Inquiry would thoroughly examine all petitions, complaints, and historical grievances. The Commission was mandated to submit its comprehensive report within four months.
At the peace summit held at the Government House in Awka, traditional rulers, Presidents-General, and community leaders from Aguleri, Umueri, and Umuoba Anam were in attendance. Also in attendance were traditional rulers from the Anambra South and Central Senatorial Districts, the Chairman of the Anambra State Traditional Rulers Council, and key government officials.
Decrying the tragic loss of lives and the widespread destruction of properties, Governor Soludo emphasized that such lawlessness is entirely unacceptable to his administration. To ensure compliance, the governor directed security agencies to maintain a robust, round-the-clock presence in the affected zones, reassuring all parties that the government remains firm, fair, and uncompromising in its pursuit of lasting peace and justice across the state.
The governor immediately convened an emergency peace and security meeting with key stakeholders from the two communities in an effort to decisively restore law and order in the area. Essentially, the meeting was to address the root causes of the long-standing dispute in the area and proffer suggestions that would help to achieve a lasting resolution of the crisis.
After shutting down the popular Otuocha Market in the area, which some residents claim is still in contention, the governor issued a stern directive ordering both communities to cease all forms of hostilities, maintain absolute peace, and exercise restraint. He also expressed deep sadness over the level of casualties and injuries sustained during the clash, reminding the people that violence, bloodletting, and destruction of property have no place in a peaceful and prosperous Anambra State.
Following extensive deliberations, the stakeholders reached a multi-point resolution to foster reconciliation and security, including an immediate ceasefire, prosecution of perpetrators, accountability for leadership, and the rebuilding of the Igwe Idigo Palace, which was torched, and condemned the attack on the traditional stool as an assault on the heritage of the state. In fact, Governor Soludo has announced that the state government will actively assist in rebuilding the destroyed Idigo palace to restore traditional dignity.
“All grievances, claims, and presentations must be channeled exclusively through designated stakeholders”, the governor warned, explaining that security agencies were fully deployed to the area to enforce law and order, safeguard lives, and prevent any further breach of the peace.
The governor reassured all citizens of the state of his administration’s unwavering commitment to the protection of lives and property, as well as the peaceful resolution of communal disputes across the state.
The traditional ruler of Aguleri, Igwe Mike Idigo, and his Umuoba Anam counterpart, Igwe George Ekwealor, have, in the meantime, appealed to their subjects to maintain peace and allow the government to handle the matter.
Former governor of Anambra State, Mr Peter Obi, has also appealed to the two communities to sheath their sword and embrace peace. In a statement , Obi said he was deeply pained by the reports of hostilities between the people of Umuoba-Anam and Aguleri.
“Hostilities of the kind we are witnessing between the two communities achieve nothing but destruction. At a time when people are already finding it increasingly difficult to survive, adding the devastation of conflict is like adding fuel to the fire.
“I appeal to both communities to immediately cease hostilities and embrace peace. No grievance, however serious, is worth the loss of lives, the destruction of homes and livelihoods, or the pain inflicted on families.
“Let us choose dialogue over violence, reconciliation over revenge, and peace over destruction. There is always a better way to resolve our differences”, Obi appealed.
