Liverpool have their eyes locked on a left-footed star who could soon join. Can they get this over the line?
Liverpool have a lot of attacking options right now. Tonnes, really, and arguably too many.
Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike, Florian Wirtz, Dominik Szoboszlai, Bradley Barcola, Cody Gakpo, Rio Ngumoha and Victor Munoz. It's a solid group with genuine world-class talent.
However, none of them are left-footed. It's a bizarre trend at Liverpool where they only sign attacks who play off their right-foot. Even Yan Diomande, the first-choice summer signing, plays off his right.
Liverpool could really use a left-footed player in attack, if only to change the angle of attack slightly. And they may have found one, even if he's very young.
Liverpool consider move for Niko Ilicevic
TeamTalk reports that Liverpool are one of the clubs in for Niko Ilicevic. The teenager is still only 15 but right on the verge of a first-team breakthrough and he's considered one of the biggest young talents in Germany.
Eintracht Frankfurt are keen to tie him down to a long-term deal, of course, but clubs are hoping to turn his head. That includes Liverpool, who have been on a mission to find the best young talent around.
Ilicevic could end up being the left-footed attacking star they need, too. No, he wouldn't break into the system immediately but with so many forwards at the club, it's unlikely that Liverpool sign someone for that group anyway.
Instead, this would be for life after the current lot. Or life with Ngumoha, anyway, who looks set to be the star of the next generation.
Now, it's difficult to know how likely Liverpool are to sign Ilicevic. He's a high-profile attacking player with the versatility to play across the forward line and scoring UEFA Youth League goals at 15.
Those players are in high demand. Very high demand. It'll be an incredible battle to get him as a result - but one Liverpool clearly believe they can win.
