Police in Amolatar District are investigating the death of a 73-year-old man found hanging from a tree near his home, in what authorities have described as the fifth reported suicide case in the region in two weeks.
Police in Amolatar District are investigating the suspected suicide of a 73-year-old man, Okello Joel, whose body was found in Anyaklana Village, Alyet Parish, Aputi Sub-county.
The incident was reported to police at around 4:00am on October 20, 2026, by a resident, Ocen Kamilo.
Preliminary police findings indicate that on the evening of October 19, Okello was seen at about 5:00pm changing the ropes used to tether his goats and sheep before marking the boundaries of his land using trees locally known as omara omara. The activities reportedly did not raise immediate concern among his family members.
At around 10:00pm, Okello went to bed with his wife, Abuyang Betty. However, at approximately 4:00am, his wife discovered that he was no longer in bed and alerted their children to help search for him.
The family later found his body hanging from a tree about 500 metres from their home.
Police officers subsequently visited the scene and documented the circumstances surrounding the death as part of their investigations.
According to the preliminary account, the deceased's relatives declined a post-mortem examination, after which the body was handed over to them for burial arrangements.
North Kyoga Regional Police Public Relations Officer SP Patrick Jimmy Okema expressed concern about the reported frequency of suicide cases in the region.
“This becomes the fifth suicide case in two weeks,” Okema said.
He said the incidents had raised concerns about the mental health and psychological well-being of people in the region.
The latest incident comes amid other recent deaths reported in the wider North Kyoga area, including the suspected suicide of Amolatar-born music producer Sam Lolo in Lira City.
Police have urged continued attention to the circumstances surrounding such deaths and the well-being of people experiencing psychological distress.
