Islamabad Police have introduced a new leave policy for 2026, making weekly rest mandatory for all officers and personnel.
The policy also sets out leave entitlements, approval powers and rules for medical needs, religious travel, marriage and examinations.
According to an Islamabad Police spokesperson, Inspector General Muhammad Sohail Chaudhry introduced the policy to improve the force’s welfare. He also ordered its immediate implementation across all divisions.
The revised framework covers casual leave, earned leave, medical leave and other categories. It aims to address personnel’s needs while maintaining departmental discipline.
Under the new policy, every police officer and staff member will receive one day of rest each week. The department will treat this weekly break separately from leave entitlements.
However, no more than 10% of the personnel in a unit or division may take casual leave at the same time. The policy also sets a 3% limit for personnel taking leave outside Pakistan.
In addition, personnel who belong to distant districts may take seven days of leave after 45 days of duty. Alternatively, they may take 14 days after 90 days.
Who Can Approve Police Leave?
The policy distributes approval powers across different command levels.
Station house officers can approve up to three days of casual leave for personnel ranked from constable to head constable. Meanwhile, deputy superintendents of police can approve casual leave of up to five days.
Senior superintendents of police can grant three days of casual leave to inspectors and SHOs.
The spokesperson’s statement says superintendents of police have full casual-leave approval powers for personnel from constable to sub-inspector. However, the accompanying police infographic says SPs can approve three days of casual leave for personnel from constable to inspector.
Deputy inspectors general can approve all categories of leave for personnel ranked from constable to inspector.
At the top level, the Islamabad IG can approve casual leave for all ranks. The IG also holds earned-leave approval powers for officers up to the SP and DSP ranks. The infographic separately identifies the IG as the approving authority for leave requests from DSPs and SPs.
Hajj, Umrah and Medical Leave
The policy provides 45 days of leave for Hajj. Personnel can also receive 21 days for Umrah or religious visits.
Furthermore, it provides for medical leave based on personnel’s health needs. The spokesperson said the department had revised the rules for medical and other leave categories as part of the wider policy.
Marriage and Examination Leave
Female police officers and personnel will receive one month of leave for their wedding. Male personnel will receive 10 days.
Meanwhile, personnel appearing in CSS and PCS examinations can receive up to 20 days of leave. The policy also allows up to 15 days for examination interviews.
Chaudhry directed all divisions to implement the new policy immediately.
He said the welfare of the police force and the maintenance of departmental discipline remained top priorities. According to the spokesperson, the revised framework takes officers’ and personnel’s needs into account while clarifying the rules and authority for approving leave.
