Barcelona will put their perfect La Liga record on the line when they host rivals Real Madrid in Sunday’s El Clasico, with the outcome to decide the title race.
The Catalan giants head into the blockbuster fixture after suffering their first defeat of the season, losing 4-2 to European champions Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in the Champions League on Tuesday. Hansi Flick’s side will now look to respond against their fiercest rivals at Camp Nou.
The encounter will also bring two leading contenders for the 2026 Ballon d’Or into direct competition, with Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal facing Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappé in one of the most anticipated individual duels in world football.
Barcelona have made an impressive start to their domestic campaign, winning their opening nine league matches to collect 27 points and sit top of the LaLiga table, five points ahead of second-placed Atletico Madrid.
They strengthened their position last weekend with a 5-2 victory over Real Betis in Seville. A win on Sunday would extend their advantage over Real Madrid to nine points, giving Flick’s side a significant early-season cushion.
Barcelona have won six of their last seven meetings with Real Madrid in all competitions, including a 2-0 victory in the corresponding fixture last season.
The Catalans have also enjoyed home advantage in recent Clasicos, having not lost to Real Madrid at home since October 2023. Their last two defeats against Los Blancos came at the Santiago Bernabeu in La Liga.
Real Madrid, however, arrive in Barcelona in confident mood after recording a 4-1 victory over RB Leipzig in the Champions League. They also beat Sevilla 4-1 in the league last weekend.
Although Madrid suffered a damaging defeat to Atletico Madrid before the September-October international break, they have responded with four consecutive wins across all competitions, overcoming Villarreal, Roma, Sevilla and Leipzig.
The visitors will be determined to maintain that momentum and close the gap on their rivals in a fixture that could have significant implications for the title race.
Who are the favourites in Sunday’s El Clasico?
Barcelona head into Sunday’s El Clasico as favourites after winning their opening nine La Liga matches to collect 27 points and establish themselves as early title contenders. Hansi Flick’s side sit six points clear of third-placed Real Madrid, who have dropped points twice this season.
However, Real Madrid cannot be written off despite Barcelona’s impressive form. El Clasico is renowned for its unpredictability, and both teams possess match-winners capable of deciding the contest. Mbappé will be central to Madrid’s hopes, while Barcelona will look to Yamal to provide the attacking spark.
Madrid will play to avoiding defeat to prevent Barcelona from opening a nine-point lead. Although such a gap would not end the title race, it would leave the visitors with little room for error in the coming months.
Barcelona, meanwhile, will aim to consolidate their position at the top and secure consecutive victories over their fiercest rivals. With Yamal and Mbappé attracting attention, Sunday’s showdown promises a compelling contest with significant implications for the title race.
