Taika Waititi’s Klara and the Sun, based on the book by Kazuo Ishiguro, stars Jenna Ortega as the titular robotic Artificial Friend.
The film follows Klara as she wishes for a charge or owner to claim her from the Friend Store, where she gets a limited amount of time in the front alcove to show off and garner attention. Then she is chosen by Josie (Mia Tharia), whose mother Chrissy (Amy Adams) is reluctant to purchase an older model of the product when the newer ones are being sold at Fancy Friends down the street. But Klara and Josie’s bond is solid from the moment they meet eye contact. Though Josie is “lifted,” or genetically enhanced, she is also gravely ill, and Klara does her best to cheer her up as well as her mother. The film also features Natasha Lyonne, Aran Murphy, Steve Buscemi and Rachel House.
