The Lahore High Court (LHC) Multan Bench has ordered measures to protect honeybees and wild pollinators from tree cutting, habitat destruction, and harmful pesticide use in South Punjab.
The order was issued on October 20, 2026, in response to a petition filed by Advocate Altamush Saeed, highlighting threats to pollinators from the cutting of mature trees, clearing of orchards, and pesticide spraying during flowering seasons.
The court directed that no orchard or mature tree in District Multan be cut down for development projects without the required environmental approval and permission from the Multan Development Authority (MDA).
It also instructed the relevant authorities to issue a bee-safe pesticide advisory before the upcoming flowering season.
Government departments were directed to submit detailed reports on pesticide enforcement, the protection of existing trees and habitats, native flowering trees, environmental assessments of development projects, and any scientific surveys of pollinator populations.
The court emphasized that the reports must outline concrete actions taken rather than policy statements or promises.
The petition cited Article 9A of the Constitution, which guarantees the right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment, along with other constitutional protections related to life, dignity, lawful governance, and livelihood.
The case will be heard again after the relevant departments submit their reports.
