Lahore traffic police have asked the Punjab government to make side-view mirrors a permanent fixture on motorcycles, citing improper signalling and careless lane changes as the leading cause of road accidents in the city.
Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Syed Abdul Rahim Shirazi wrote to the Secretary Industries Punjab with the proposal.
The letter recommends that motorcycle manufacturers permanently fix the mirror rod to every bike and that the practice of removing side-view mirrors be discouraged. It also calls for suitable manufacturing standards for motorcycle makers.
According to the CTO, 62 percent of traffic accidents in Lahore occur because riders and drivers fail to signal properly or take insufficient care when changing lanes.
Helmet use among motorcyclists is already high, he said. About 97 percent of riders wear helmets on model roads, and more than 88 percent do so on other roads.
Shirazi said side-view mirrors should now be treated as essential alongside helmets. Riding without them raises the risk of accidents, he said, while permanently fitted mirrors would let riders see traffic approaching from behind and from the sides.
The CTO said the proposal is intended to reduce road accidents and make travel safer for motorcyclists.
